New car

Pass that place (and KwikFit) on the way to the pictures or if I need something from town, can't say I've ever made a visit to either place, never mind part money. :p

I understand why they do it. It's all about presentation and when your driving past, you can see the cars a bit better. Obviously when you are walking around though then you couldn't give a toss.

Wow... the OP is getting murdered.

I think everyone is being a touch harsh tbh.

So its not got a warranty and its a 525D which means it can thrown up some big bills.

And the fact that its not as nice as a facelift model obviously isn't an issue as he's happy with it.

Don't really think the fact that its not got a massive options list is a problem either, he's obviously happy with the spec, even if he is unsure whats standard and whats not.

All the warning was done in his last thread, no point having a go at him now. Its too late.

To be fair, I don't know much about the 5 Series but looking at that one, it looks alright. But i'm saying don't buy one from ****ing Longlands!!

And it's not too late yet ;)

It's just frustrating to watch, MrLOL. He asks us about cars, we tell him, and he totally ignores everyone. Now it's his money he can do what he wants, we cant tell him what to do but why waste our time asking us if he isn't at all interested in the advice he receives?

And to then rush out and buy literally the closest one he can possibly find not 12 hours later, it's like watching a car crash in slow motion.

Then going on about how its mint when its covered in buffer trails and 'perfect spec' when it's pretty much base is just the icinging on the cake :(

at the end of the day, if it breaks he'll just have to pay to fix it.

If he gets no help from them because the warranty is worthless its not the end of the world, it just means he'll have to pay the full ammount. And if its a 4 figure bill it will be an expensive lesson.

Its the same with kids tbh, sometimes you can't tell them and you have to let them learn from their own mistakes.

He may even get lucky and not have any troubles and all the scare mongering will have been for nothing.

meh.

Buffer trails can be polished out, breakdowns can be fixed. If he's happy with the standard spec who are we tell him not to be. The wording of his posts just reflects how happy he is.

Are you advocating the acceptance of all advice given on the internet? Or just yours?

Has the guy paid for this car?

He should cancel the deal and walk away.

I dont know what comes over people some times when they look at cars, they just dont seem to be able to see things rationally.

I look at that car and I see:
High miles (bad)
High Price(bad)
undesireable engine (bad)
High maintenance prices (bad)

What do other people see?

It's hardly high miles to be fair. And if it's got FBMWSH and it's one owner from new, it's hardly the worst deal in the world now is it?

Nothing wrong with these cars at higher mileages if your prepared to pay the running costs. They don't all have injector problems and turbo failures at 100k.

One thing you will want to look at though is the car will be fitted with a diesel particulate filter. If this hasn't been changed already it will be coming anytime in the next 10k miles, that will throw a £1000-1200 bill at you. You can check the life left in it on the iDrive service menu, I would do that before you hand the money over. It won't be covered under warranty as it's a service item and they very rarely go above 100k before blocking up (on pre LCI cars this is, LCI cars now have DPF's fitted for the life of the vehicle).

Except the running costs make choosing the economical diesel pointless, as you've just gone onto explain by detailing the DPF replacement at considerable cost which is just around the corner on this car!

That will be on any Euro 4 diesel car of that age. Nothing wrong with the BMW version. If he was truly worried about the over all running costs he wouldn't be looking at a 10k car in the first place.

You'll note I'm pretty consistent on all Euro 4 diesels and I'm not singling BMW out.

Most people don't even think about it - this is why there are so many people driving around in diesel powered cars who are suddenly shocked when the turbo lets go or the DPF requires replacement at 4 figure cost. People either dont know or simply dont want to know.

I know what your saying but the majority of people who own these cars won't have injector or turbo problems and are just happy that they are getting higher MPG. There may be one owner who ends up replacing a turbo but normally that won't be the first owner and in a lot of cases the car won't need a turbo or injectors. DPF on the other hand is guaranteed on earlier Euro 4 cars.

I think once we get to 6+ years old and 100k+ miles more people *will* have problems than will not. I appreciate you've probably had no bother with yours but then it's a far newer, lower mileage car (And was more expensive as a result).
