Update
Reviving this thread as I went for a test drive in a 1.4 Scirocco 160PS (Manual 6 speed box) last saturday whilst the Polo was in for a cheeky "fix".
After a quick 20 minute blast around the roundabouts and dual carriages ways of Crewe, I was most certainly impressed.
The car does not feel like a 1.4, the power is always available and the handling of the Scirocco really was in another league to the Polo. Not unsurprising but
a lot better than I was expecting.
The driving position just feels "right" and definitely more of a sports coupé than a hatchback. the car i drove was an ex demo 1.4 TSI model with the pre 2010 interior, one thing I did notice was that the cabin did feel a little small (being 6"3") however I took a seat in the newer 2010 model and everything felt a lot better laid out. Maybe its because the 2010 interior is similar to what I am used to (Polo). Either way was definitely impressed.
The engine itself was mild mannered and generally quiet even at high speeds but once dropped down a gear (especially 2nd) and revved hard it really did sound awesome. Now I have seen videos of milltek exhaust on 1.4s and they sound sweet however I haven't even got the car yet LOL.
After a lengthy chat to the VW guy I asked him about the Polo GTI which he said they wouldn't have a demo car for another 3 months at least and are expecting customer car deliveries around September! He said the main concern with the Polo was understeer and even in GTI form it had nothing on the Scirocco handling wise, this is coming direct from VW.
So I'm pretty much sold on a 1.4 Scirocco so unless Toyota release the FT86 for 20K before the end of the year (never gonna happen!) the Scirocco will most likely be my next car! So months of saving ahead!
