Hi,

New to dslrs and Bought a 550d before Xmas with the tamron 17-55 lens which is great.

Of to the states later the year to do Vegas, grand canyon, la, San Fran.

Just wondering what lens would you guys recommend to get next ? Was looking at the 50mm lens which gets great reviews but obviously no zoom.

Thanks

how about an ultra wide like the sigma 10-20, or maybe a telephoto.

The 50 is good, but the tamron is nice at 50mm, and you will only drop from min f2.8 to f1.8.

Any lens will be a bargain in the states compared to the cost in £. I would buy the most expensive I can afford. If the Canon 5d mk3 is out when you're there, you might get a good deal on a 5d mk2.

Depends how serious you want to spend on a new camera. Getting something like a Sigma 10-20 would be a good choice as its used mostly for landscape.

Whatever you need? Don't need anything, don'y bother. Don't buy another lens just because you've got the money. If you constantly find yourself at one end of the range of your lens wishing for more than buy a new lens, or if you're struggling in low light the 50/1.8 might be worth it, it's more than a stop - which is the difference between 1/15th (difficult to handhold) and 1/30th (workable for me) or between ISO800 and ISO1600. Or if you just want shallower depth of field for creative purposes. But don't bother just because you can...

thanks for the replies.

firstly I don't have the budget or plan to spend too much as I'm still very new to all this.

I find the Tamrom great but ( maybe it's just me ) but find it difficult to focus on everything. It's like the depth of field is 'overkill' so landscapes with an object in the foreground i can't seem to do.

Also I won't be buying a new camera no matter how cheap :p the 550d is stil brand new and good enough for me so far.

Would a lens really be cheaper in a standard retail store in the states ? Don't really have the time for lens shopping ...

Zoom out to 17mm, Select F8-F16, place your focus point from a 1/3 - 1/2 way in the frame, i.e. not on either the background or the foreground.

Everything should now be in crisp focus.

You could always just hire a UWA lens to take with you on your trip if you're unsure of what you need/want.

The reality is that for most occasions "kit" lenses are great. If you want the most amount of versatility and you're not a tele-photo junkie then maybe you should consider some 2.8 glass in the 24-70 zoom range, or a lens that I really love, the 24-105 f4 with IS. Some people moan about it on a crop-frame body, but I love it when I'm using my 50D.
