Went to my normal bar last night, at the start of the night I've handed in my jacket to them for £1 and you get a little tag thing to go with it. End of the night, they don't bloody have it ... Lost it or giving it to someone else.

What do I do, I went mental at them and nearly got chucked out, the manager is going to check CCTV and ring later, but what if don't find it ... Next thing I know he's pointing to some sign saying they don't have responsibility for goods lost or whatever, that's completely outrageous, why am I paying for this shoddy service then ...

That sucks, but unfortunately their legally covered by having that sign there. You pays yar money, ya takes yar chances, as the saying goes :(

not true, I remember in my business a-levels we covered this stuff, the same as people think if supermarkets put those yellow cleaning signs out when floors are wet they are covered when people slip and sue...

I'd check out martin lewis' site, there'll be advice on that!!

You've paid for service and entered into a contract...they've broken their end!

I did say I will be suing so please say I have some back up haha thanks mate

Admiral that's what I said, if i didn't pay that's my own doing but I am paying you for a service ...

For a common cloakroom yes but not when you are paying surely. I think the OP has a valid point otherwise what'is the payment for other than raking in more profit?

To cover the cost of the staff handling the cloakroom.

I don't know the legalities, he may well have recourse for a claim from the bar.

Since you paid them a £1 to look after your jacket, you entered a contract with them which they have not kept.
Speak to a solicitor. You could probably take them to small claims court.

If the establishment clearly indicated that they have accept no responsibility, which they did, then OP doesn't really have case but it does beg the question as to the charge in the first place.

Fair point but then why bother employing cloakroom staff at all.

Just because they say it doesn't mean the law agrees with their signs. I'd be super-peed off if that happened to me.
