R32 GTR Vs Impreza P1?

I was wanting a P1 last year, but the engines are so prone to failure I just coudlnt knowingly buy such an aging car for £10K with so many risks.

I can have an Evo 9 FQ340 for £12-£15 - just makes more sense.

P1 sound though - cannot be beaten :D

interesting i didnt know that...... any particular reason why the engines fail?

Mainly due to a dodgy map. Don't think they were mapped properly for UK fuel as standard.

Also the heat issues that affect scoobies (think the turbo is located quite close to a certain cylinder which makes it get hot).

That and hooligans like Will Gill buy them which is always going to be an accident waiting to happen.

Dont go for the P1. The Type R impreza is a better car, quicker and cheaper to buy than the P1.
Wouldnt think there is much in it, impreza is a lot lighter. We have a GTST and a impreza sti and both are equally as fun.

They are often modified without a remap causing issues. Mainly decats etc. If looked after and run on 99 fuel they are bomb proof. If you do modify it make sure its remapped by a decent mapper.

As i said the Type R is the better choice

If you look at many of the P1s for sale, a very high percentage have had engine rebuilds. The ones that have survived that long are ticking time bombs. Its such a shame too, they still look and sound spectacular for a 1999/2000 car.

Something to do with the bottom end, just as the guys above have mentioned.

agreed if the p1 hasnt had a rebuild or reworked with oil squirters then its a ticking time bomb, if it has then its a very reliable engine.

type-r's are lovely but are imports so history can be hazy, either way you get a fantastic looking car which will decimate 99% of the cars on the road upto 80mph

i love them, others don't, marmite :)

Personally try both.

Don't deny the Type R has more going for it but most will have the low ratio gearboxes. I had a Type RA with the low ratio box and it really was hard work.

Over 4K on the motorway at 70mph.

I wouldn't have said GTR running costs and P1 running costs were similar - I would have assumed the GTR was more expensive.

I also think 2 door tax on classic impreza isn't worth it. I'd also be tempted to look at newage if the car is to be used daily.

thanks for the info guys.

GTR at the moment is a bit of a garage queen and doesn't get used enough, i want something i can use more often and not worry so much - so maybe i should look at a P1 / type r with a rebuild?

If your set on a Subaru, I'd be tempted to pop over to scoobynet - you'll get a feel for good or bad cars to purchase and also get an idea of whether the rebuild on the car is a decent one - dependent on who did it etc.

Use my classic everyday :)

Fresh imports without rebuilds should be considered as you can run them on 99 which many didnt when older ones were imported (dont think V power existed)
As long as its clean, service history and mapped properly for any mods thenyou should be good to go. :)
