I posted a while ago with no success on helping me decide between these 2 Processors.
AMD Athlon x3
AMD Phenom x2

I will be using the M4A78 Motherboard..ASUS

Which of the two processors works best? For Low end gaming and video/image production..

Will unlocking cores need extra cooling?
Thanks

Hmmm...tricky one.

Overall, i would have say go for the tri core, even though the lack of 6mb level 3 cache will hurt performance in some games, but that should be offset by the extra core in games that can use more than 2 cores effectively, which is only going to increase in the future.

Also, get a decent motherboard as you will have to overclock via the FSB, if you go for a non black edition CPU, so the better the mobo, the higher more stable OC you will get.

And if you get a dual core and try for unlocking, then yes, you will need more than the supplied factory cooler if you want to give it a good overclock.

But with the Phenom x2 there is a chance that it could be unlocked to 4 Cores

The Athlon II X3 is based on the Athlon II X4 or the Phenom II X4. Hence the Athlon II X3 has the potential to be unlocked to an Athlon II X4 or Phenom II X4.

OTH,if the unlock does not work the Athlon II X3 will be much faster for video and image editing and in games which support more than two cores when compared to a Phenom II X2.

do you have a budget in mind?
if you can get a BE model, then they are really easy to OC so would be a good start, also, from the bits i have read 3 cores seems to be what games like, so i would be dubious about shelling out on a dual core (yes mine is a dual core, but it unlocks to tri easily). unlocking is a risk, you might get a DC and end up with a TC or QC, you might be stuck with a DC, its pot luck.

I have a 500 pound budget, but I am comfortable of spending 300..I have 300 in hand, I will have to withdraw from back for more expensive budgets

thats what i got so far :
