New car

It's not that people in here actively look for fault with people's purchases. It's usually that people come in here asking for advice which is then ignored or they come in here without asking for any advice but without any knowledge either.

The difference with OCUK Motors and most other forums is that if you buy a lemon or get a rough deal, people here are prepared to tell you what a tit you've been.

It's never personal (unless it's MikeHiow ;)).

Thanks for clearing that up anyway Panzer :D I'm guessing this MikeHiow has a bit of history then....

nice rust on the wheel nuts and front break disks you have there.

Yeah that's an MOT Fail for sure!

Brake disks rust because they are untreated metal and I am sure with it being on a forecourt it would have been getting washed a lot.

Also rusty wheel nuts? Another major issue? :D

Well, i've had the car just over a fortnight now, and already, it's saving me £20 a week in fuel at least, my mondeo must have been that bad!, i'm putting £50 a week in now instead of £70-£80. I'm guessing i'm averaging about 42mpg, mostly light footed tbh but i have put my foot down for the odd overtake etc, i just don't feel the need to hoon about everywhere now, sure, it's not that fast, but it's quick enough for me, and the power is there for quick overtakes when i need them.

I've had a couple of weeks to think about unexpected running costs, and whilst i have my warranty, which will cover upto £1000 per claim, the only thing i'd have trouble with is if the turbo ever goes. I know that can cost around £4k at a dealers, i've not found out how much it would cost at a indy yet, maybe somebody could enlighten me?. My partner has just had a hefty pay rise at work (when she goes back in July) which means we're some £800 / month better off, so we'll be sticking a lot of that in a savings account to cover any mishaps that aren't covered. Also, just before the car gets to 100k miles, i'm going to take out another comprehensive policy with someone like warranty direct so that should cover even the turbo if it goes (let's hope it lasts out a year lol).

According to my service schedule on idrive, i've got about 30k miles left of my DPF, that hasn't changed in to 400/500 miles i've driven in the last couple of weeks, so i reckon i've got about 18 months life in that yet. However, my car is running a little cool at about 79/80 degrees so i may have to get the EGR and main thermostats checked / changed under warranty (i assume they aren't classed as a consumable?). But when the time does come to change the DPF, i'll have it removed and the car remapped for half the cost of replacing the DPF. Tyres and brakes aren't as expensive as i was expecting, i'm looking at about £165 a corner for RFT's, or even less if i move to normal tyres (which i may do).

Overall, i'm genuinely pleased with the car, even if it an oil burner, it's still more refined than the petrol mondeo, it's nicer to drive than my audi was, there's more feel in the steering giving more confidence, and it handles better than any other car i've had before. On the thrusday night before i picked it up, i was like wtf have i done, and i was a bit worried, but all of that has gone now and i've no regrets. I think it looks really nice inside and out, i don't regret not going for a 530D (although it would have been nice) and i'm definitely glad i didn't go for a 4 pot 520D. I think i've made the right choice for me, like i said though, you're all entitled to your own opinions, even if you believe i paid too much for it. I've not seen many for much less than i paid tbh, they all seem to be around the same price.

I'll probably change the car in under 2 years anyway, (i get bored after a while) and hopefully by then a Q7 will be in my price range, or even better, we'll be in a position where we can afford an F10 530D - although i think that will be unlikely for a few years yet.

You are that fussed about a 20 quid a week fuel saving when you've just told us your partner is getting an £800 a month payrise?!

I'm more interested in the fact he is loving the £20pw saving, yet has more going out on finance now, and then other costs such as tyres will be much more than that of the Mondeo...so...saving....really?

It's more to do with the fact i'm giving less money to the government through fuel tax and VAT. However Just because my partner is better off, doesn't mean i want to spend more in fuel, i wanted a nicer car and the money saved on fuel is just a bonus. I was just pointing out that it's costing me about £90 a month less to travel to work, which is always nice.

Surely anyone would like to pay less for driving their car about - regardless of how much their car costs? A car is something i don't mind paying for, whereas, fuel is a necessity you have to pay for that you'd rather not.

It might only be £20 a week, but thats still over a grand a year less fuel isn't it.

Didn't you just give the government a whole heap of VAT when you purchased the car?

Umm, surely the first owner paid that?

from what i've just read, the garage pays VAT on the profit it makes from selling the car, i.e, garage pays £6000 for car, sells it for £7000, pays Vat on that £1k profit which obviously is £200? But youcan't be charged VAT on an item twice. Unless i'm horribly wrong, i'm sure somebody can clear that up?

To be honest, I'm quite curious to know myself!
