Ok in lite of the earthquake in Japan this news might seem a bit insignificant but check out the short video and see what happen, after the bus overturned it slide into a poll that almost perfectly seared the top of the bus off at head height from front to rear, very unlucky indeed, I imagine the scene of the accident must have been pretty gruesome.

I was thinking that it must have been going at some speed for that to occur surely?

not really, the bus was hit from behind by a truck 'n' trailer just before it over turned, & if it over turned just before it hit the steel pole, then the windscreen & roof supports of the bus are not going offer a great deal of resistance to a big steel pole.
 
The bus is heavy so even if it was in the speed limit the momentum could have made the damage much worse. There isnt much protestion to the front of the bus either as it is flat so again the damage would have been greater
