Good to see PunkBuster stopping legitimate players from enjoying the content they bought

So I'm playing BF2 on Wake, I'm playing as a Medic and have possibly racked up my best score with near on 80 team points and a good kill/death ratio.

I'm then kicked by PB because my files are not up to date, I'm already aware of this issue and have tried to fix it by downloading the PBSetup.exe utility from here:

http://websec.evenbalance.com/downloader/download.php?file=1

Now, I keep tying in the CAPTCHA code on the page and even though I'm 110% that it's always the correct code I'm entering, the page keeps telling me there's a mismatch. So I can't actually update my Punkbuster.

All the manual downloads appear to be for Win32, I'm on Windows 7 64-bit.

Can someone see if they have the same issue with the site?

Okay, I just tried this in Internet Explorer and it's now downloading.

Anyone else care to try the above link in the latest Chrome? Not beta.

Worked fine for me first time in Chrome.

Because playing in cheater riddled servers is far more enjoyable?

You're naive if you believe PunkBuster actually stops most the cheaters, I was a Punksbusted admin for Solder of Fortune II and there were undetectable cheats out there. Lots, not one or two, but lots.

The server admin tools are easy to get around (i.e. avoiding screen capture, file checks and cvar checks) and Evenbalance are just too slow at updating Punkbuster for it to catch people out via looking at what's loaded into the clients memory.

I'm well aware of how many cheaters get through the net of automated cheat systems and how the majority manage it.

Regardless of how many it does or doesn't catch, it's also a deterrent. You're average person wont just go and google an aimbot when they get frustrated because of fear of getting banned.

And besides, would you'd rather not have the hackers that it does catch banned?

They don't get banned on a global scale though, they get banned from that server, at least that's how PB managed bans on SOFII. I doubt they enforce global key bans on BF2, like Value do with VAC.

On SOFII, PunksBusted made some software that took members server logs (mine included) processed them for kicks/bans due to cheating and the software compiled a master ban list that members received every x amount of time.

Still, it was only server admins who signed up to PunksBusted, so still not a global ban. It's not much of a deterrent, you can get caught on one server and buy a new game copy for £5 and learn your lesson.

I'm pretty sure that PB supports global banning of a CD key for some games, and even complete hardware bans for people that try to circumvent it.

I'm not saying that it's the best anti-cheat at all, and it's got quite a few flaws with it, least to mention Even Balance's uselessness. I'd rather have it over nothing though. ;)
