Buying 2nd Hand Car. Please Advice

I think the safest way would be if i took seller to a branch of HSBC and did the CHAPS transfer infront of him and then wait till it clears into his IF account.

Hang on a sec, he is selling it because he wants a 'Volvo Jeap'?

What on earth is that?

He's already ordered a Volvo XC70. I think thats what they are called. Volvo 4x4.
TT is no good as his wife is pregnant so he is getting something bigger.

CHAPS only guarantees same business day I thought and I think the cutoff is ~3pm (I guess earlier will always be better anyway). If you're worried that it's not his account send some random amount like £1.24 to the same acc (through BACS) and ask him how much you sent but it's likely this is all good. It's a pain in the arse that he wants to deal like this but I honestly can't see anything wrong with the way he's suggesting you want to do it, there will just be a gap where you have paid and have nothing to show for it but it shouldn't be long.

BACs, CHAPS, Internet transfer......all the same really. I suppose the seller wants the assurance that the money exists and will end up in his account.

Im just going to take him to a local HSBC branch and do the CHAPS at the branch infront of him so he knows the funds are there and have been submitted. He can draw an assurance from that and i can draw assurance that it is recorded.

This is strange....
Just rang Warrington Audi to enquire about the car, as service books had they stamps on both of the 2 services, and sales guy told me they dont have any information on the car meaning its never been serviced there.

It appears they inputted the wrong reg on audi side so clerical error.
I originally spoke to a guy on sales but this time i spoke to some one on the servicing desk and she was very helpful.

They have confirmed that the car did come in as shown on the recipts and confirmed mileage at both times so all tallys up.

Unless it's changed since I worked there, although IF is a part of Bank of Scotland, and therefore Halifax/Lloyds, there were a standalone company and you couldn't pay in over the counter (well you could but they wont accept it anyway). Also good luck finding a Bank of Scotland still open in England, there was only 19 branches and they've all closed down, don't confuse them with Royal Bank of Scotland, you'll get laughed out the door.

Chaps is a same day payment, fee should be around £20, but should be there before 3pm same day.

- HPi check on it comes through clean with no problems.
- All finance on the vehicle has been paid off and ive seen the documentation to prove it - Rang Santander and they have confirmed that there is no finance left on the vehicle and i can go ahead and buy it.
- Audi Warrington have confirmed mileage and service records so that documentation adds up

Guy is willing to go into a branch of HSBC and doing the CHAPS transfer there and then waiting for it to land into his IF account.

The guy selling it is "Head of Finance & Commercial" for a large pharmacy company and ive looked on the company website and it does show him as the Head along with a picture of him. He's also emailed me from his works email address.

I dont think there is anything else i can do............
