Supreme commander substitute?

I've always loved Supreme Commander, and Forged alliance even more, however since getting my new sandybridge build, I assumed I could play large maps/large players/large armies (it took forever to play large games on my old PC, I just didn't bother trying), but I'm constantly getting crashes whilst playing, from a google, it seems that it's a fairly common problem, with the game trying to use more RAM than it's designed for, and thus causing an error.

So, is there a similar game as good as (or better even?) than Supreme commander, or Forged alliance? I've played C&C 3&4, but like these less (mainly because of how the AI seem to be governed by a completely different set of rules to human players, on all difficulty levels), but are there any others I could try?

Cheers all :D

just mod it to be large address aware, there's a program called lattido or something similar) that'll do it.

although FA should have laa support by default.

(assuming you are using a x64 os)

I've looked into it a bit on google, but everything I've found says it's done in FA, so not needed... Might try looking into that "lattido" program though, and try it anyway...

And yea, got W7 64 bit with 8GB RAM...

EDIT: Linktoinsanity: I'm not sure, but I'm not as keen on SC2 anyway, it's ok, but feels like a completely different game :(

Should try Starcraft 2 out if you havent already. Online functionality is very good with matchmaking and ladders if you like competitive play. Singleplayer is very good too with a decent story and varied missions.

@ianTakeo: What's TA? Or was it just a typo for FA?

I might give Starcraft 2 a go, never tried it before, I like competitive play on some types of games, but not on others, so I'll have to see what I think of that :)

BTW, I thought I had sorted why it wasn't working, however turned out it only delayed the crash a little. I turned off xfire ingame, before, it was crashing at about 2.47GB RAM usage, but after disabling, it was crashing at about 2.58GB, either it's some other bug, or there's a problem with my RAM, as it's pretty much the exact time each time. I'm hoping to run a full battery of stress tests etc on my PC when I'm home for the Easter holidays, but until then, if I want to play large maps, I guess I'll have to just save the game every 5 mins or so.

TA = Total Annihilation (CC = Core Contingency, BT = Battle Tactics, TAUCP = Total Annihilation Unit Compilation Pack)

SupCom is the spiritual successor to TA, possibly the most awesome RTS ever. The TAUCP is just a 'mod' (more addon) that adds some new battle presets, enemy AI boosts and loads of new units.

2.5ish RAM sounds like a very odd number to be crashing at.

Ah, Total Annihilation, never played it, but have heard of it before, just couldn't think of the name :P

I have a possible idea why it might be 2.5GB...

From what I've read whilst searching how to fix, it's only able to use a max of 4GB of ram in total, but that includes gfx ram, and as I have a 6950, I have 2GB of gfx ram, which means only 2GB left for system ram, however this could go upto 2.5GB if 0.5GB of the gfx ram is being used elsewhere (quite possibly by the OS for my other 2 monitors)

I'm not sure if any of that makes any sense, I should really be in bed... Anyway, I'll probably try some other things/other games when I get up, but it's bed time now I think

There is a fix for that problem, quite easy to find online, just need to edit an ini or something. Worked for me.

I'm a really big FA fan, but I picked up Sup Com 2 and the DLC pack on the steam sale and I found despite all the negative press it's an excellent game

It was such a joy playing a coop game at a LAN with a friend that DIDN'T grind to a crawl despite the high spec machines present.
I suspect that after lots of updates and the DLC, the SupCom2 that exists today is nothing like the one that came out at launch.

Er... from what i understand theres practically no change in the game from launch to now, just a few balance updates to address things like gunship spam. As DLC goes there was the completely random release not long back that isn't even worth getting. A few maps, some units that should've been in the game to begin with and some enhancements in the research tree, not even something in the way of a SP campaign, for £10? Its not even worth half that. Which reminds me i need to dl the Revamp mod and try that out.

The bad press stems from the fact its an abomination compared to the original. The whole attraction of TA and Sup Com was the scale of the gigantic war which was massively dumbed down for SupCom2. Its not a bad game in the same sense the later C&Cs releases were plain bad, its just a bad sequel.

I haven't played it since to know for certain but the pcgamer podcast mentioned that the ai had been improved significantly from launch so hard actually provided a challenge.

As a SupCom 2 fan, I can tell you this is definitely true. The AI is also now customisable, so you can tweak research, veterancy and resource boosts that they get, and what style of build they should be. Its not groundbreaking, but certainly more challenging.

I think that the gigantic war factor is still there, you just need the right opponents, if you don't defend properly against rushing enemies, or if you don't have an opponent who can defend properly, while you both tactically attack each other, you can easily get to a state where the map is overrun with units in a massive all out war...

I've played plenty of 2v2-4v4 matches where its come down to this, however, I have to admit the economy system was butchered from the first game to a point where you could be running on unlimited resources veeeeeeeeery quickly.

I also enjoyed the DLC, partially that some of it should have been in the game already (well the maps at least), the units were a great addition though, and I was happy to pay for them. If you're picking them up fresh now though, I'd wait a while till they come around in another steam sale, purely because they seem to be in fairly regularly, and why pay more when you can pay less?

TLDR; SC2 isn't bad. Wait for it in sales though, seems to be popular on Steam.

*EDIT* to make the post on-track, I've not found a single game that comes closer than SC2 to scratching the SC/FA itch. I miss those days... the mem issue isn't present in SC2 as far as I know, (none of my friends have ever had it for SC2, but did in SC/FA) however there is definitely a fix, as I know friends that have used it.

More importantly what strategy game since AE2 didn't have formations fr units and your only option was "form a big square over there so 3/4 of you can't shoot"

I know with a new PC you won't want to, but I recommend the first Dawn of War (specifically the Dark Crusade expansion). The best RTS of all time, in my opinion.

Fond memories of my packs of 9 Prism Tanks in C&C forming a neat little square :D

1 thing that no other game could beat was the ability to, once you had enough resource production going, just build a large number of vehicle/kbot/air/ship/hover platforms, target the enemy base and order a gigantic amount of units and just watch an endless stream of units assault the enemy base before the battleground ended up so covered in wreckage you could barely navigate it.
