Earthquake in Japan....9.0...ouch!

BBC = BTN. Just need Lewis Prothero on screen and we're there for that channel.

:D

Whose with me? Whose bloody with me?!

It wasn't the nuclear power plant they created, it was judgement!

On a more serious note... my gf tells me they've sold out of the anti-radiation pills in Finland due to some pretty damn extreme panicking regarding the NPP... there isn't even a remote possibility of radiation reaching them.

I think there is in general a real lack of knowledge in the public distinguishing between nuclear weapons and nuclear power stations, reckon if you asked a lot of people they probably think the power station runs off some sort of bomb!

The news coverage of this situation certainly hasn't helped peoples opinions in that regard.

I've got a question for people on here who I hope have a bit more knowledge than me, at what point will these reactors be safe? Is filling them with sea water just a temporary fix until they come up with something better or they fix the cooling systems (don't know if they are even trying to do that?)

Most if not all people know about the dangers of Nuclear power stations is Chernobyl. If you said 'Three Mile Island' people would nod and smile.

Oh and some retard somewhere (possibly finnish news again) started off 'end of the world' theories by coincidently adding together 9/11 and 03/11 and coming up with 12/22, our beloved doomsday date.

Can't see anything in the news about the use of control rods in any of the reactors. Anyone know anything?

the Nuclear Rods are used to generate energy, which is what most of the cities in Japan use.

I think they have inserted the control rods to stop the reaction, but there is residual heat and radioactive decay, they said a number of times on the news that problem decreases over time as the residual heat and radioactive decay disipate.....

I read somewhere that the decay heat output is about 3% of the normal operation output. So you can imagine how bad it would have been if those control rods were still out. The melt down would have happened instantly.

I wonder how many P4 Prescott CPUs are needed to produce the same output of that 3% :o

So the radiation caused the helicopter to bend and buckle in the air? I notice it didn't just fall it kind of folded into itself.

Don't think that is what he meant. The pilot passed out, lost control and the rotor blades then clipped the crane's cable. The blades then pretty much disintegrated and the helicopter turned turtle and plummeted to the ground.

Ahh right, the back propeller (don't know its proper name) seemed to just fall apart with no impact though.

we have a Japanese employee over in the UK this week.....her family is from the north of Japan too.

Poor girl looks completely shocked........credit to her to continue working.
