What's the worst outcome of this nuclear plant situation?

Equivalent of a low to moderate grade dirty bomb most likely if things get a bit out of hand, the chances of something like Chernobyl are slim to almost non-existant but should another large quake happen to hit Fukushima No. 1 under the current circumstances a larger scale fallout isn't out of the question (and given the area of the world the the frequency of mag 5 and higher aftershocks/quakes we can't rule that out).

Excuse my ignorance.....I am all for nuclear power but is not dangerous to build plants on such a small island next to a fault line/tsunami zone despite the precautions they have taken?

No worse really than building them in any other part of the world (with lower precaution against earthquakes) I think the only significance here is the fact they persisted with 40 year old designs (granted they were about to retire (apparently)) with reluctance to properly maintain them as well.

As I said in an earlier post what people probably don't realise is both the insane level of engineering that goes into these designs to harden them against earthquakes and other impacts, etc. and just how insanely more force occurred in the original quake compared to anything anyone anticipated.

It is when the design presentation of the builds stated that quakes above 7.9 would not occur in the fault zone seems to be the biggest problem. The risk assessment has not reflected what has happened on the site of the power plants :(. The fact they have withstood so much and the Tsunami.... We dont know which caused the most damage yet.....

Are there any stories of looting and unrest yet? The Japanese (highlighted by that picture of the queue) appear to be amazingly disciplined considering the circumstances.
