Evening all,

Need a quick opinion for which I'm sure the answer is yes but want to check anyway...
If one was to obtain a pair of ATI 5870 cards. Based on running an i7 OC to 4.0 Ghz, 1xSSD, 1xHDD, would my Corsair AX750 power the lot without any trouble? I only ask as I'm pretty sure these cards are wattage hungry?
Any one else done this?

Thanks,

Only reason I ask is that I did a quick check on the Corsair PSU advisor and it was suggesting the AX850 (if only I'd have known lol).

Ok I guess if I get these cards I'll see what happens.

Thanks,

Ran my sig rig with 2 Asus 5870's overclocked, never missed a beat ;)

Thats good to know... One question I do have for you then 'BigBruiserAl', just how good would they be in crossfire?

Um depends what we are comparing to? I played WOW,Killing floor,BC2 back then, it could max them all out 1900x1200 res with very hgh fps. Against my 6970 my max fps has gone down but not noteicble my min fps has gone up and is very noticeable, ofc the noise and power consumption is better so all round happy days

Performance using 2 x 5870s is very good, I play crysis and crysis warhead,l4d2 and all are set to max(AA@2 or4) at 1080p..Not sure how you config your CCC but I also have everything in there set to max(AA set to application)..

I always use Fraps to check my games and both the crysis run at a min 30fps for me,so these cards will last a long time for gaming in my opinion as droping the odd setting probably wont make much diff to the eye candy in two or 3 years time when games can push your cards. :)

I had some problems running two x 5870 in crossfire with a corsair 650 so i bought a coolermaster 850w and all is well now.

Thanks for the input guys. I've changed my mind and managed to pick up a pair of 295GTX cheap for SLI for the time being. I don't have the endless pot of money to buy a pair of 5's.
I need SLI in my life!

Honestly, if you haven't bought the cards yet, I'd get a pair of 6950s instead. The reason being that 5xxx scaling isn't that good at all.

Anecdotally, I have a 5870 and when I CFed it with a friend's card the scaling really wasn't that good. I'm saving up and upgrading to a newer generation.

Review/benchie wise I think the general consensus is that 5xxx series crossfire underperforms compared to NVidia 4xx/5xx and AMD 6xxx cards. You'll still notice great performance increases in most games, but it'll be closer to a 50% increase rather than a 100% increase - i.e. not a good performance vs price balance.

Quote: 'Where the last generation of AMD GPU was neutered when it came to CrossFireX scaling, the 6970 and 6950 are "fixed" in that regard.'

Incidentally I've found it funny on this forum - I'm new here, and when I mentioned that 5xxx scaling sucks in a previous post lots of people disagree, very nicely it has to be said. But on xtreme and [H] where I've been for years anyone who even mentions 5870s crossfired gets laughed at :p.

EDIT: ninja-ed by OP :). Good luck with your new cards!
