Why is there no looting in Japan?

And what is your opinion Magick? Or do you like to post this racist crap and then sit back watch the outcome?

Between 2002 and 2003. I was there for four months, I left of my own volition.

Haha to be fair, it is the last road in Deptford before it turns into Surrey Quays, but it is still technically SE8.

Ah I was going to ask if you knew Mr Frazer there, but he may have just retired or be retiring at that point. Plus he was over in the Osterley distribution centre at that time mostly.

how was the pay? i'd guess it was only slightly higher than ordinary retail-desk-jockeying?

Rubbish. £13k if I remember.

It's not racist as such, we're highlighting cultural differences here. It's pertinent to the discussion.

No, no idea, sorry. I never went to Osterley.

I was just curious to Magick's opinion - seeing as he asked the question but offered no input of his own.

I think the Japanese don't bother with second hand stuff, there is no market for it and they just bin it and buy a new one.
I guess that extends to acquiring stuff lost in the tsunami

I'd argue it is. Black people don't loot. Poor people do.

I'd bet that more so here than New Orleans, the population are well off AND have their goods insured. There's also less to loot and more pressing concerns due to the greater loss of life.

Very different culture and a very different attitude towards authority.

I think that is pretty much it, also in the affected areas there are generally very few non residents, and a lot of police/army etc which probably makes a difference.
Also as others have said, there isn't a lot to loot from the worst affected areas.

I doubt that there is no looting, but probably a minimal amount.

The Americans would impatiently and distantly ask for their money back.

The Chinese would shout and hit the desk for emphasis.

The Japanese would apologise for even being there.

My colleague next to me even kept a tally of all the people during the day who had annoyed him by race [he was Asian himself]. The Japanese were lowest on that list.

When my brother travelled to japan as part of his msc course trip, he flew by virgin airline. Now the airline had both british and japanses air hostesses:cool:.
He said that british air hostesses were somewhat less polite and weren't as friendly. On the other hand he said that japanese air hostesses were very respectful and took great care of passengers. I told him I wasn't surprised.

So I think cultural values have something to do with it aswell.

But I would find living in the japanese culture very restrictive, on a slightly different note.

It was a legitimate post. Quit being so touchy.

Look, maybe I'm wrong and If I am I'll hold my hands up and say so. But when someone posts stuff like this, offers no opinion of their own, even after 30 minutes of starting the thread, to me it sounds like they have nailed their colours to the wall in post 1.

I might be wrong, but that's how it comes across to me.

Watching the news yesterday they showed a clip of a supermarket that was running as normal despite no electricity and outside there was nothing but devastation

The staff had turned up like normal and were helping their fellow countrymen.

I can't help but think if this was the UK or USA then the shop would have been ransacked.

I was in Japan this time last year.

Pretty much every Japanese person is so friendly and helpful. The moment I even looked slightly lost and confused on the underground, 2 different people came to offer me help and to try and translate. I didn't even have to ask.

People in Japan take great pride in their jobs, it doesn't matter if they are a big executive or a road sweeper, they'll take pride in it and offer the best service they can. Always helpful, always polite.

It was a delight to visit such a country.

I'm not surprised in the slightest that there are no reports of looting.

The answer's been said and well reaffirmed.

They're a honest race the Japs I fully expect both that they'll be back up and running very soon, and that there's no looting.

Different races have their own attributes which is why for example, for me, any argument about rescinding the laws involving marijuana and speed limits on motorways is flawed simply because British people aren't Dutch or German respectively.

Some shops would be, not all areas/communites of the UK would ransack itself.

As many have said it's primarily due to:

Culture
Standard of living
Education

It is changing slowly, especially in big cities like Tokyo/Osaka where there is a greater concentration of people. Also the greater westernisation and unfortunately influx of immigrants who are not subject to the later two points above.

That said there was a report 2 months ago that there was an increase in shoplifting in Japan...... by the elderly. In part because of rising costs/alleviate boredom and wanted someone to talk to/attention :D

As to the question of Japanese immigration, it is tough! As it should be really.
