On par with 460 768MB

The gtx 460 768 walks all over the gts 550. It has significantly more cuda cores 336 as opposed to 192, and can be overclocked as well. Keep in mind that the 550s come at already high clock rates out of the box (900 mhz) so as to compensate for their lack of power and most of the times you won't be able to squeeze more than 100 mhz more on the core over the standard 900 mhz. Whereas the gtx 460 comes at 675 mhz stock and can overclock to 850 easily effectively blowing the gtx 550 out of the water for virtually the same asking price. I don't see why anyone would buy a gts 550 over a gtx 460 768 given the current pricing.

On par with 460 768MB

Umm, no, it produces lower frame rates and uses more power than the 768mb 460s. However, it's also cheaper, quieter (fair bit) and smaller. In fact plaits 500ti sonic edition has a nice 100mhz oc, side mounted power connector and is tiny. Like mini itx tiny (impressive really).

Edit: actually, does the ocuk one up to have end or side mounted power?

I only looked at one review (due to the card being crap) and it performed similarly to a 460 768MB, so that's what I said.

All in all, I don't think it's worth it's price tag.

Nvidia priced too high again, I'll let a quote form Anandtech do the talking.

So what’s the problem? The same problem NVIDIA normally runs in to: pricing. The GTX 550 Ti seems destined to sell based on NVIDIA’s name and market presence more than it will sell based on performance characteristics. Not having a reference card muddles our results some, but ultimately it’s clear that AMD’s pricing has caught NVIDIA flat-footed.

No offense, but after looking at the spec, the GTS550 looks like nothing more than a higher clocked GTS450...

At least unlike the 8800GT to 9800GT rebrand, they are kind enough to offer a higher default clock this time....but at this kind of price, people would be crazy not to get the GTX460 768MB instead.

or clueless

More like £40~ IMO.

Seems to use different density memory to hit the magic 1024mb number. Natively it should have been 768mb or 1536mb depending on what density was used. Very strange setup...

Surely this leaves quite a sizeable performance gap from the 560 right down to the 550?

Although I guess the GTX460 will keep it filled until it goes EOL.

Id guess the GTX460 is faster than this & the 465 is a lot faster with its bigger GPU.

Very impressive Memory Clock: 4100MHz (Effective) for such a cheap card, but at what bit-rate?
Also, does it really have 4100Mhz RAM, considering the Sparkle GT 440 you're peddling really has 1066Mhz RAM (not 1800Mhz), but you've not changed the website to show the correct speed.

It's well below GTX 460. It's more like a 5770, or slightly better. It's really not worth the price imo. Better off going for a 460.

IMO, for this price...they should have made the GTS550 with the same spec as the GTX460 768MB, but with 1GB VRAM instead while keeping the 24ROPs, that way it will sit between GTX460 768MB and GTX460 1GB performance and essentially replace both cards (bare in mind that GTX460 768MB has 24ROPS, GTX460 1GB has 32 ROPs).

It is a tiny bit better than a stock 5770 which will likely overclock better in any case and its around £30 more expensive than that.

In fact you can get a 6850 for around the same price if you look around... not worth it.

Maybe you have hit the nail on the head.

The GT 550 TI is just a rebadged 9800GT !
:p
