Tri-Channel RAM in a Dual Channel Board

Hi Guys,

I know this could go in the memory thread but its a very silent place in there.

Out of interest if you took 2 out of 3 sticks of tri channel RAM and placed them in a dual channel motherboard, would they act any differently to, what is sold as, 2 x dual channel memory sticks?

is it any different in the slightest??

OcUK were selling "dual channel kits" recently that were really from triple channel kits with a stick removed so i don't think you'll have a problem.

Interesting you should say that... thats exactly why my question has come up.

the only difference between single sticks and dual/tri channel kits is that the dual or tri channel kits are simply tested together and as such are from the same batch as each other.

If sticks work in tri channel they will work in dual channel as the sticks are confirmed to be identical as far as settings are concerned.

The sticks come in individual plastic casing, 1 stick per case. I've just built 3 PCs and originally ordered 3 x Corsair XMS3 4GB (2x2GB) DDR3 PC3-12800C9 1600MHz Dual Channel Kit

What I actually got was
Corsair XMS3 6GB (3x2GB) DDR3 PC3-12800C9 1600MHz Triple Channel which was broken down into 3 lots of 2.
Its not a massive issue if what your saying is true.

No mate, the other way round. They were selling dual channel kits that comprised two sticks from a previously labelled tri channel kit.
