Is It Worth Me Upgrading My Graphics Card ?

Hi,

This is my system -

Gigabyte P35-DS3L
Q6600 @2.4GHz
ATI 4870 1024mb
4gb ram
Corsair 520w psu
windows 7 64bit

I've just started playing Rift but the fps is a bit low and I've had to turn off the shadows and AA etc to get a descent fps.
Would a new gpu of say £100 or under make any difference ?
or is this system to old to just upgrade the gpu ?

thanks

Agree overclock that Q6600 to 3Ghz atleast and then think about a new GPU, maybe sell the 4870 and you will get £50-70 for it and buy a new card for around £150-£170. You will see a huge difference then from the 4870. Also the Q6600 is a great cpu and will easily hit 3Ghz to 3.6Ghz depending on the stepping you have and CPU cooler.

Thanks for the replies guys.

Bumped my Q6600 upto 3GHz and got another 25-30 fps :)

It is idol at 37°c and 48°c while playing the game for half an hour, which seems fine, I think.

fps still drops quite a bit when I pump up the game settings so I guess I will still get a budget gpu to replace my old 4870.

Thanks for the help though, I didn't think oc'ing the cpu would have made such a drastic improvment :)

Also is there any gpu around £100 or less that would be a big improvment on my 4870 ?
If not, I will lay off buying a gpu for a while.

For £100 your lookin at something like a 5770 or the new nvidia 550. You'd be kinda wasting your time with a 5770 or the 550 as your current GPU either beat or matches both in benchmarks. I know it might sound a bit obvious but are all your drivers up to date, sometimes that helps loads mate. But at 1050 res your card should do pretty well I would have thought.

Yeah I am getting 55 to 60 fps but as soon as I crank up the AA and shadows (even on low) it drops quite a bit.
I always make sure my drivers are upto date.
Also I guess as its a new game, they will do some performance tweaks here and there, same with future drivers.

Something like this GTX 470 would be the minimum worthwhile upgrade I reckon.

A 6950 or 560Ti would also be good if you could find them at a decent price.

Yeah the 6950 looks pretty good, they had it on here the other day for £190. Gotta say thats what I'm looking at when I finally get my broken crappy ASUS p8p67 pro back from being fixed.

Its not your system mate rift is a horribly optimised game not many people can run it with AA + Shadows at all, my 460 runs it at ultra with shadows off, no ground clutter and only edge smoothing, supersampling is impossible to run for a lot of people, so dont upgrade your card just for rift as you still wouldnt be able to turn shadows/aa on :)
