Lotro extended blu ray

Hopefully the video quality is much much more improved as I took delivery of the trilogy today and have to say the pic quality is poor for blu ray especially for such as high profile trilogy. (Episodes of Supernatural and Lost are way superior).

I haven't bothered with Blu-ray yet. I see it as a way for studios to screw people for even more money, by releasing half baked BD's of films people will want to buy again in HD. There are plenty of films worth having on BD though, I just get cheesed off when a great film is released on BD, and they do almost nothing with it. You can bet your boots an updated version will follow sometime later. The extended versions of LotR might tempt me into getting a player though. However, going by what Mithrandir said, if the extended versions turn out the same as the theatrical versions, I'll probably not bother and stick with DVD.

Pretty sure they will re-master these the complaints about the origional transfer have ben pretty loud and clear! Plus the cynic in me sees it as a way for the studio to make even more money then they have already by releasing the origional theatre cuts well in advance of the special editions.

hehe true for the first one; however, the last one had better image quality - although nothing of reference level which i think this trilogy deserves.

the cool thing was the 7.1 HD audio which was an improvement over the dvd release.

anyway let's hope this extended version is remastered to reference video quality. god knows that they have had enough time to address this issue which slated the original br release

When you look at Blade Runner, which looks outstanding, from what I've seen of screen shots. A 25+ year old film, that looks far better than many newer films, it shows what can be done. The amount of complaints that the LotR theatrical version BD's had, not just because they decided to release the cinema versions first, but also the PQ, shows it was way to get desperate people who wanted LotR on BD badly, to part with their cash. There were some people who tried to justify it, by saying they didn't like the extended versions, and preferred the theatrical versions instead. That's fine if both releases have the same PQ, just theatrical and extended versions, but if the extended versions get a make over, that will surely annoy the people who bought the theatrical versions, knowing they wouldn't want the extended versions.

Question is, assuming there is a remastering. Would that remastering still have been done if no one had complained about the quality of the theatrical BD release? or was it planned all along? Obviously, will have to wait until nearer the time, to see if they do remaster it.

Certainly glad i haven't bought it yet then!

Star Wars BD set is out this autumn too.

With respect to quality, some films just have amazing cinematography (Blade Runner being one of them) so they come up very well when remastered - i watched BR on BBC HD last year which is why i still haven't watched my BD of it which was bought for me at Christmas but i'm looking forward to it.

One BD i was disappointed with was 28 Days Later - an excellent film, but it was shot almost entirely on mini DV! So it looks absolutely awful. The director was going for a grainy/gritty look - a look much better achieavble on the right type of film or in post processing. Should have stuck to the DVD on that one.

For many things i buy the DVDs, only getting the bluray if the film deserves it (hence why i now have Back to the Future and i'm waiting for Star Wars and Indiana Jones to name a couple)

That's a good point Dave. James Cameron made some great movies but used poor quality film. Probably the main reason why T2 looked pretty average when released on BD, and thus had many people moaning about the picture quality. He made a reasonable stab at remastering Aliens though, going by some shots I've seen. I think had he not, it would have looked poor.

For all my complaining of great films, that look poor on BD. One thing is for sure, if the potential for great HD picture quality wasn't there in the first place, it's very hard to put it in afterwards.
