A small challenge for you guys.

I have been out of the loop with upgrading my hardware for some years now. For example, my current PC is specced as follows.

MSI Neo2 S939 Motherboard
Athlon 64 3200
4GB Ram
X800XT
750GB HDD (3x 250GB)
DVD Writer
Random 450w PSU

Now when I built this machine it was used for high end gaming (Many, many moos ago:D), but now I don't ever game on my PC. I only use my PC for playing music, browsing the internet and video editing.

I have now bought a HD camera and of course need to be able to edit, process and watch up to 1080p video.

I was thinking of buying a s939 X2 CPU to see if that would do the job with the rest of my current system but the main reason is I don't want to spend much.

So, the challenge is, spec me a base unit only for the sole purpose of HD video editing for as little money as possible. As I said before, I've been out of the game for too long and the current amount of hardware available is bewildering.

Could be done slightly cheaper (dual core, 4GB RAM) but realistically for HD video editing that's the minimum system I'd suggest.

If the OP kept his DVD Drive, Hard Drive and Case you could probably bump that up to a 6 core 1055t?

I have a decent case (Coolermaster 110) and I rarely use my DVD drive. Would I be able to keepy my hard drives and DVD drive thought with them being PATA?

Would I also have to change PSU?

HD video doesn't stress the memory, currently have 4gb and only using less than half, even when trying to process HD footage. Would I really need 8gb??

PATA as in IDE.. would be miles better putting the money in for a new Hard Drive, a 1TB samsung F3 which is one of the fastest mechanical Drives at the moment is around £40 if you could stretch it. DVD Drive would be fine due to not using it often.

Yeah as in IDE. I didn't even know if IDE existed anymore :D SATA was the latest craze when I last upgraded!

So, in theory I could keep my hard drives aswell as DVD drive? Would I suffer any serious performance issues with my current hard drives?

Would my PSU be up to scratch? It was only bought less than a year ago, and has from what I can tell, all the necessary power connectors for recent hardware.

What brand is the PSU, check it out. You could be unlucky and have a not so great brand one which could go WIZZBANG and take your parts out with it! i wouldnt want to risk new parts myself!

Its not a top make, thats for sure. It replaced my Akasa Paxpower 460w which did blow up but my components were fine :D
