2 is great, just avoid 1 like the plague. *

*unless you enjoy lots of dull cutscenes and repeating the same 3 things almost every level
 
2 + dlc and then brotherhood = epic!

AC2 is the only game on the 360 ive completed twice (1000g)

Played it to death on the GF's 360 and achieved 1000g
and then i was off for 9months from work (last year) and decided to do it all over again on my 360 :)

Yet to play Brother Hood however AC2 is better than AC1.

However I really enjoyed AC1, while it was repetative there was a compelling sense of progression unlocking citys, areas, weapons and moves.

I also thought that AC1 combat was better - it was not as stylish as AC2 combat, however it had more moves and hence combat options than AC2. It was really noticeble.

Overall it was only the combat got me through AC1. Whereas in AC2 the whole package is more complete.
 
AC1 was awesome when it came out but when you play AC2 you wouldn't go back to AC1. Personally I found AC2 the most entertaining, closely followed by Brotherhood but I complete them pretty fast.
 
If your more interested in storyline then gameplay then start from 1, if not then start on 2 as the others say, brotherhood follows straight after 2. I'd recommend reading wiki or watch utube vids for abit of the storyline if you start from 2 :)
 
Like everyone says avoid AC1 like the plague, it's awful. At the time it might have been technically excellent (still is pretty good now as well) but ultimately it was so damn boring. Doing the same things over and over again just in slightly different enviroments. After finishing the game I did a few easy cheevos but got bored and stopped on 760G.

AC2 on the other hand is excellent - couldn't put it down since getting it and was enthralled by the story. Everything that was wrong with 1 was put right by this one. Did all the side missions, loved the story and couldn't get enough - got the full 1kG on it.
AC:B is a very very good game in its own right too - the combat was tweaked in a good way I thought, added the Assassin's Guild part (which comes in VERY handy in some missions), massive map and of course multiplayer. The new DLC has just come out for it too so i'll be getting that in due course which adds new cheevos, story, multiplayer maps & characters.

I'd say play 2 then Brotherhood - only play 1 if you positively have to. The story through all 3 games so far I find utterly, utterly compelling and CANNOT wait for AC3 :)
 
Assasins Creed really put me off the entire series so I avoided them all until my friends started badgering me about Brotherhood and the online play. Well I bit the bullet and got it and its like a totally different game so much nicer in every aspect and the online mode is pretty fun too. Looking forward to the next one should be epic.
 
I read that the next one is going to be in America during 1775 - War of Independence. George Washington has the apple or something.
