Hi guys,

My dad is after a Blu-ray/DVD player and it would also be great if it could play MKV files stored on my PC straight over the network.

Just looked at the Sony BDP-s370 but sadly it will only play MKV off a USB.

Anyone know of one that will?

Thanks

I know it's not the answer you want but i have the s370 and i simply keep a pen drive plugged in the front (external HDD in the back) - pop it out and copy the mkv to it. Takes a couple of minutes and i can turn my pc off while i watch the file.

I read the sony doesn't support NTFS file system so is limited to 4.5Gb file size.

I think he will be better off with a Playon HD.

that is true - although ntfs is difficult to support so i don't understand why there isn't a bigger push for exfat

The forth coming Denon, Marantz and OPPO Universal players will stream over a network, you'll be looking at around 600-700 quid I think for them.
I'm wait to see what they are like, and if they will also support FLAC

A PS3 can do exactly what you want, whether you want to spend out on one though is a different matter.

Why is it crap? You can't rewind or fast forward but other than that it works perfectly.

A fundamental needed feature of any media streaming device.:p

Fact is the PS3 used to be the centre of my cinema room streaming from my WHS...I got sick of using MKV2VOB just to playback a media file.

I then moved to PS3 Media server

PS3 media server is buggy and crashed a lot and a PITA. Just Pausing a film caused issues if I wanted to nip the loo after a few beers while watching. Pause come back and it was laggy ,usually crashed and was not solid enough for my needs. The WHS was a i3 BTW so had more than enough grunt to transcode on the fly.

I now run XBMC and a HTPC

Makes the PS3 for media streaming look like a Morris Minor:p

Scrolling through nearly 500 films in the PS3 interface to get to the one you want was enough for me to want to ditch it! That and no native MKV support and even FLAC for lossless audio!

Don't get me wrong as a BD player the PS3 is great and for games etc..And I still have it.

For a dedicated media streamer with a cheap BD drive XBMC is hard to beat.Sleek, solid, amazing looking, feature rich, search function amazing, solid updating of newly added films, film art, tweakable...I could go on :p

I should know I have tried many devices bluray players and software options.

XBMC is great on many levels and hasn't once caused any issues of any kind.

I think you answered your own question there LMAO.

lol

The other option is a cheap BD player for disk playback and a Playon HD mini2 if the OP doesn't want to invest in tweaking a HTPC

I used to sing the PS3's streaming abilities....but tbh its lack of codec support is pretty bad in the current climate....The mere fact you can't plug in a NTFS 2 TB drive with your films on as it only supoorts FAT32 is something out of the dark ages....A new firmware would sort all this licensing nonsense out and allow the PS3 to gleam...Currently its a stifled device thats great for Disc playback and games...and even BBCi player and 4OD.....but for other stuff its crap and its due to not agreeing to unlock the firmware to support these fundamental codecs and file systems, when the whole world is going digital.

It transcodes on the fly.

Its pants...There are far better options.

I use it nearly on a daily basis, works perfectly for me, isn't buggy and I can pause and skip through a file easily enough, regulrly Stream 1080p content from my media server hassle free, I'm not sure how you've got it working so badly.

My media server has a stock q6600 in it, running over a gigabit LAN.

Content? What file type...what container?

Is it transcoding though? You need to check this....Some MKV's don't require transcoding on the fly to the PS3 as the codec within the MKV container is suitable for PS3 playback.

P.S I'll eat my hat if you can jump to...or rewind to using it!:p

Every MKV I have works fine (hundreds), and I'm sure it's transcoding based on the CPU usage. I use the "Go to" option to skip forwards and backwards, you can choose how how much you can skip forwards or backwards.

See the seek bar in the image? You use the time next to it to go forwards and backwards through the media file.

Take a screen grab of your actually setup playing back a MKV over your network using PS3 media server.Displaying the file details

Also whats your CPU usage and how big are the files?
