GTX480SOC not stable at stock

I received my Gigabyte GTX480SOC yesterday but it crashes when running Nvidia demos, sled, alien & endless city, particularly during intensive scenes. This happens at the SOC's shipped clocks of 820/1640/950. The only way I can get them all to run OK is when I underclock it to reference speeds 700/1400/924.:eek:

I thought it could be my PSU to GPU connections, but they are on separate 12V rails and I've swapped them around with no change.

I have plenty of airflow through the case and the CPU is WC'd with two rads right now. (setup is ready for a WC'd GPU eventually).

Nothing is OC'd atm. Typical temps for CPU cores is 21-36 deg. System 33deg
GPU V 1.06 MEM 1.54. I did see 78 degs for the GPU once.

GTA crashes badly at max settings, but it is a fresh install and I've not looked in that yet. Crisis Warhead seems to run OK!

Any ideas. It should really be stable at it's SOC stock speeds, or should I RMA it and start saving for a GTX570-580
 
Sounds like an RMA. Sounds like it's either the PSU or the card and your PSU should easily be up to the job.

FYI mine runs flawlessly on an unbranded 1KW psu.
 
Guys make sure that your case cooling is up to the job!

I had a EVGA 285 For The Win card some years ago it used to artefact at stock untill I put another fan in front of it.

GPU isn't getting hot though - in the 70S under load - nothing special

the fact that reducing clock makes it more stable - speaks volumes no ?
 
Looks like Gigabyte have set too lower volts for the clock speeds, this may not effect all cards/cores, some need more volts than others. Try pushing the voltage up to 1.050, that's what I need for a stable clock on my EVGA 480 at 820 core.
 
Strange, ..mine runs fine up to 850 with stock volts. not tried anything higher yet.
What volts do you need to make it stable ?
( you have not hit the extreme button by mistake ?... i did when i removed it from packaging. )
 
I did press button first by mistake -but its "blue" now which means normal SOC right ?

whats your stock volts on it please ?

1.035V (stock) seems to enable 790 to be stable

820 seems to need 1.088 - and not sure about that either
 
my cards stock volts are 1.035v.

BTW... what is the highest safe voltage to put on these ? would be good to know when i try to stretch the cards OC legs...
 
All cores are not equal, one card that maybe fine at 1.035v and another not, if you're not keen on pushing the volts up to get stable at stock clocks then RMA it.

I wouldn't go past 1.138v.

I've heard up to 1.2v is safe but that depends entirely on having adequate cooling.

Mine at stock is 1.075 so it may be worth increasing the voltage as others have mentioned to see if it is stable. Mine is currently at 870 core 1.138v with a load of 77-80C
 
lol i just checked my 2 asus cards which i got last week and there set to 1.088 at stock clocks
 
mine probably going to have to go back - had a 570 before which didn't artefact- and this new card is very prone to it it seems

at stock 820 - 1.035V - Heaven you could see artefacting - run OCCT test - and 700 error s within 20 seconds !!

increase volts to 1.088V - and OCCT manages 2 minutes, then has an error or 2

increase to 1.1V - OCCT manages 4 minutes b ut then has an error

drop clocks to 800 and 1.088V - OCCT much better now manages 6 minutes but then an error

very annoying - do they actually test the overclocks ??? its obvious the core just doesn't like to be clocked - fine if it was a stock card - not so if its a SOC

OCCT measures 12V line - and it shows it doesn't go below 11.6V
 
I've got a feeling this is why the SE card exists... they seem to be having a hard time lately cherry picking GF100 cores that make the grade for SoC (more recent Fermi cores are usually a bit better for heat/power use but don't clock quite as well).
