Was just wondering where Apple can take these two devices next? The iPhone 5 will presumably be announced any week now but what can they do to improve upon the iPhone 4 seeing as that pretty much included everything people wanted to see from a hardware perspective.

Likewise the iPad, the obvious alterations of it being lighter and thinner, front and rear facing cameras have now been done so other than an improved screen what else can apple do with this device now?

What do people want next from these two products?

Iphone 5 will be ipad2 just smaller.
Ipad 3 will get slight upgrades 1gb ram, cameras (although pointless), better screen, lighter again.

I think apples next move is much more to do with IOS and hence the dual cores.

Well i can see the iPhone 5 getting the iPad 2's CPU (Apple A5 Chip).

So hopefully we will see a noticeable performance gain from the Dual core 1Ghz A5 Chip.

Apart from that i have no idea.

They are seriously bringing out an iphone 5 and ipad 3 already?

Is it just me or do you think that Apple already knew exactly what they were going to put in the ipad 1 & 2, aswell as iphone 3GS and 4 probably a year in advance?, it's like they're holding back putting everything into one model and just squeezing money out of the apple followers lol

They could have put all the features of the ipad 2 into ipad 1, the technology was there they just seemed to hold back just to bring out more models every few months, now the same is happening with the iphone 5.

I don't see what else they could possibly put in the ipad 3, maybe a better screen and camera, but what else is there? Soon enough it'll basically be a fully working laptop without the keyboard. Yeah they will make it smaller and lighter but they're not HUGE changes are they.

For the iphone 5, they could put in a faster CPU, maybe a dual core? and better graphics but that's about it, it already has most things you need for a phone.

The ipad is almost like a larger version of the iphone.

Good marketing strategy though I guess!

!

But why, no competition, therefore you maximise profits. Apple does this anyway.

it's a 12month cycle

Well Apple does have an incredible market share of the phone and internet tablet industry so I guess you are right.

I just find it amusing how a lot of people (even people I know) buy Apple products religiously and they don't realise that if you wait a few months, there will be another model with improved features, but I guess you could say that about most technology these days.

But Apples market share in internet tablets has decreased (although only a small amount) over the past 6 months or so from what I read somewhere.

It did decrease a little to android tabs, but iPad 2 was flying off the shelves. I've resigned myself to only owning every-other apple product and just skipping one cycle at a time...

and how long you going to wait for 10years?, new models come out every 12months (so not every few months) and as you say it's the same for all tech.

it's the same for computer upgrades. People who say wait are silly.

of course share will decrease, as there are now alternatives. if just one person buys an alternative it's share falls. however it's sales have still increased and that's the important figure.

The next iPhone will be released in June/July in time for WWDC.

I expect a storage bump to 64GB memory, 1GB RAM and a 5 MP camera.

iPhone went

iPhone
3G
3GS
4

So could go 4GS with the dual core chip.

They dont want to make it bigger or smaller so the screen size is limited and fine for what it is in reality.

Better battery performance and software tweaks plus 1080p video playback out the bottom via HDMI.

Memory increases and camera quality (better low light) probably too, maybe making the front facing camera less 1998 Logitech QuickCam VC in quality.

A source from Foxconn who we believe to be reliable has provided us with some information about Apple’s fifth-generation iPhone. Most of the information lines up with past reports but we have also learned a few new details. Most notably is that the iPhone 5 has already been seen at Foxconn and is soon going into the normal mass production stages. In terms of design, the iPhone 5 is said to look fairly similar to the iPhone 4 except for two very important differences: materials and screen size.

The iPhone 5 will keep a relatively similar size and shape as the iPhone 4 but Apple has decided to move away from the back-glass enclosure found on the fourth-generation device and move to something similar to the back of the first-generation iPhone from 2007. Although some reports claim the iPhone 5 will adopt a curved metal back, our source says models have been floating around with a flat metal back. The material of this metal is unspecified. Our brains say aluminum but our hearts wonder if this could be Liquid Metal.

In terms of Apple moving from aluminum to plastic in the shift from iPhone 1 to iPhone 3G, if Apple keeps the same antenna design (which was not mentioned by sources) as the iPhone 4 and adds the flat aluminum back, this back should not cause any reception issues. The next major enhancement is said to be a larger display. An enhanced screen for the next-iPhone has been rumored, but an exact screen size has only been pinpointed by Digitimes (4 inches). Our sources do not have precise screen measurements for the iPhone 5 but are certain that it appears to be larger than the one found on the iPhone 4.

Purported iPhone 5 engineering images surfaced last week, which appear to backup some of the information that we have independently heard. Our sources do not have pictures of a fully manufactured device but were able to provide a photograph of the iPhone 5′s charging cable that compares the cable to that of the one found in the iPhone 4. The cable does not look very different than the iPhone 4 version, lending credence to a similarly-shaped device. (Note: iPhone 5 is for iPhone 5, GSM and CDMA are iPhone 4 parts)

We speculate that we’ll be seeing an edge-to-edge screen, like mentioned in other reports, in addition to a faster, dual-core chip to match the iPad 2. For those keeping track we were able to gather correct iPad 2 information prior to its announcement starting with cases, then the screen, finally culminating with the white iPad 2 digitizer. We’re doing something similar here with the iPhone 5, so expect some more iPhone 5-related information here in the near future.

This is the latest information available about the iPhone 5. I think I will skip this one and get the iPhone 6 next year.

The iPhone 5 will also feature NFC which is a step forward in security and all-in-one type devices.

The Guardian today did a nice write up on the iPods 10th year birthday, its a good aritcle talking about the birth of it if ya mange to catch a read of it...anways..they hinted a lot about the possibility of an iPhone Nano..tIm thinking how this would make sence considering who the iPod (classic stages)..where bolstered by the Nano..which got Apple into more poeples homes. Makes sense from a business POV, as a mobile company..they dont make many models at any one time. And wasnt their a leaked new larger screen template?

I agree whoever said about it being about iOS now..they are going to have to make some big changes for it, even I am getting a bit tired of it...well not tired maybe just bored.

New payment system I belive, which there's going to be a huge push towards over the next few years.

Uses and applications

NFC technology is intended mainly for use in mobile phones. There are currently three specific uses for NFC:

* Card emulation: the NFC device behaves like an existing contactless card
* Reader mode: the NFC device is active and reads a passive RFID tag, for example for interactive advertising
* P2P mode: two NFC devices communicating together and exchanging information.

Plenty of applications are possible, such as:

* Mobile ticketing in public transport: an extension of the existing contactless infrastructure, such as Mobile Phone Boarding Pass.[2]
* Mobile payment: the device acts as a debit/credit payment card.
* Smart poster: the mobile phone is used to read RFID tags on outdoor billboards.
* Bluetooth pairing: in the future pairing of Bluetooth 2.1 devices with NFC support will be as easy as bringing them close together and accepting the pairing. The process of activating Bluetooth on both sides, searching, waiting, pairing and authorization will be replaced by simply bringing the mobile phones close to each other.
