Right, I've been a lurker here for a while now and thought I should probably contribute something! So this is my way of introducing myself...

I know a lot of you have shown interest in these cards, especially with the current 10% off promo taking them to just over £200. Mine arrived this morning and I've had an afternoon of playing and tweaking. Firstly, this is not a reference card with the Gigabyte cooler strapped on. It seems like it's the same PCB as the SOC version, only without the factory overclock and the dual bios function. Everything else seems the same, including better power management and those 12 green LEDs. Nice.

The card is not as long as I thought it would be, it easily fits in my CM690 II with about an inch to spare. After a quick BFBC2 session I installed MSI afterburner and had a go at some tweaks. After 30 minutes or so I've got a stable OC of 845 Core/1690 Shader/4400 Memory at 1.100v. Under furmark this pushes temps up to 81c with the fan speed on max. During actual gaming I'm seeing temps of 76c with fan on 60% load. I suspect I could squeeze a bit more from it, to be honest, but it would be a struggle to hit the 900MHz core speed that a lot of the SOCs are hitting.

My opinion of the 480s have always been that they seemed super fast but were way too loud and hot. However, this card has neither of these drawbacks. It's whisper quiet, even with a decent OC, and load temps of 80c aren't anything to worry about. Load temps at stock were more like 68c with the fan set to 60%, which is great.

To say you can hit close to 580 speeds for a little over £200 is incredible, if you're on the fence about one of these cards due to the typical flaws of the 480 series then forget about them, they're not an issue here.

The only thing I can't comment on is the power draw, I have no way of measuring the wattage of my system. All the reports I've read has said the later revisions of the 480 are a lot less leaky in regards to power, so as long as you have 600W+ I'm sure you'll be fine. For reference, I have a 750w Cooler Master and have had no problems.

Good first post. Do you have any pic's of the back of the PCB ?

This should have been the sort of card Nvidia released 18 months ago. Still, it looks a good buy for £200.

Agree with everything the OP has said, dropped mine in, working great with a HX620W, just done half hour of Warhead (all Enthusiast!) and the card remained quiet throughout.

£200 well spent IMHO!

What clocks are you hitting hex? Did you also get the SE?

Haven't tried OC'ing it yet, only got home an hour ago, so i've just got it in and run a few games to test.

Will be having a play over the weekend, and I've got the SE as well :)

Sorry, no pics yet but it really is identical to this:

The only thing that differs is on the front of the PCB there's a little blank space where the BIOS switch is on the SOC. It also has the same capacitors highlighted on page 3 of that review.

OK, so this is weird. I have a slight issue with this card. When the GPU is >20% load, it makes a high pitched whining noise. At first I thought it was the fans, so I locked the fan speed at 40% (keeping an eye on temps), and the whine is still there. The whine changes pitch (gets higher) the higher the GPU usage.

I first noticed it when I went onto the Cyrsis Warhead menu, which applied a little bit of load to the GPU and the noise appeared. Any ideas?

That'll be coil whine, if you turn on Vsync it should stop it.

Mine doesn't make any noise other than the normal fan kind.

Usually happens when your card is drawing a very high number of FPS (like on the menu in Warhead where it'll easily go to over 1000FPS), by bunging Vsync on it limits it and stops it going mental.

It's a bit hit and miss if you'll get a card that does it or not.

Sounds like a dry joint on the PCB or something, which may have a higher chance of failing one day.
Im no technician though

Could be worth enquiring about an exchange if its a few days old as that whine has gotta be annoying.

OK, how so I det vsync as a global option? Can I do it in the nvidia control panel? I'd have a poke around myself but I'm away from my computer tonight...

Yeah, I might give them a ring and see what they say.

I use D3DOverider (comes with RivaTuner, which I don't use), forces Triple Buffered Vsync on everything, works a treat.
