Just looking for some recommendations for good pubs in Manchester.

Staying around the Deansgate Lock area.

Also I take there will be no big issue getting in with shirt, jeans & shoes rather
than getting all dressed up ?

If near Deansgate Locks, look no further than Knott Bar. It is just over the road. Fantastic range of beers, really tasty food and nice atmosphere. Can get a bit busy in there at times, but does tend to thin out.

The only other place I would recommend is Sandbar, but that is a good 10-15 minute walk/stagger away! :p

If you must stay around deansgate locks I would go for Rain Bar / Knott / Atlas. Possibly Dukes if it is a nice evening.

If you want a proper pub then there is Britons Protection and Pevril of the Peak nearby too.

Some good pubs been said. If you're in the area give the pubs around Oxford road train station a go, The Thirsty Scholar is brilliant, they have about 30-40 different bottled beers from all round the world plus the stuff on tap and the music is brilliant in there, there are live bands all the time or vinyl DJs playing ska and stuff like then. Then next door is the Salisbury which is a great pub which plays a lot of rock and Mogwai and what not. Next to that is Grand Central which is Manchester's main rock and metal pub. They are my favourite 3 in the area :D

*edit* i think the Thirsty Scholar is closed at the moment because it's under the railway bridge but they are doing work on the bridge atm :(

The Britains Protection is a fantastic little pub. Only been in the once but I remember it being one of the better pubs I've been to in Manchester.

Rain Bar is quite nice as well, especially if the weather is half decent.

It's a shame the GC is such a dive and has crap beer. Salisbury is far, far better and still considered a Rock/Metal pub. Just doesn't have live acts like the GC.

Yeah the Salisbury is great, if it wasn't for the music and bands in GC i wouldn't bother with it. Are there any other good pubs like that around?

Not for rock/metal as far as I know. There is Postmortem but that's a bit crap. People only go for stupidly cheap drinks. It was in Zoo, it has moved again now. Can't remember where.

It's now 3 slightly different nights spread across 3 venues, Cavendish, Zoo and maybe retro bar?

Screw town, only decent pub in town is The Britains Protection, head out of town to The Cresent pub, loads of different ales to sample.

Better night out in Bolton as well.
