Morning all,

Going to be wanting/needing a pair of floorstanders soon.

I'm eyeing up these...

http://cgi.ebay.co.uk/Acoustic-Ener...iFiSpeakers&hash=item2a0f095acb#ht_500wt_1156

I'm attracted to these for a few reasons...

They are 25 mins away in the car.
I currently have 4 x 'bookshelf' AE speakers of the same style in the same colour, so they would match perfectly. I intend to replace 2 of the bookshelfs with these.

I'd like to know peoples opinions on these speakers. I'm not after ZOMG AMAZING sound, but if considerably better quality can be had for the money then I'll listen. I am currently happy with the output of my bookshelfs, so the quality will be fine I'm sure :)

And I'd like to know what they are worth, when I have a decent figure I'll email him see if he's willing to end the auction :)

Cheers all!
Jake

Well I don't know how handy my answer will be be but they are worth whatever someone is willing to pay for them.

So I guess the question would be what are they worth to you?

I find that people rarely want to end auctions early unless it is a relist because they may be able to get more for them if they let the auction run.

I happen to have the full 5.1 set of these, consisting of.

2x Aegis Evo 3 Floorstanders - Front, Bi-Amped
2x Aegis Evo 1 Bookshelves - Rears
1x Aegis Evo Centre
1x Aegis Evo Sub

Can just about make them out in this pic.

Taken in the dark with flash hence the awful quality :p.

They're cracking speakers tbh, very good movies but aren't quite punchy enough for music IMO. But that will vary with your amp. I use mine with a Yamaha DSP-AX861.

I managed to grab the full set, with soundstyle stands aswell for just £175. This however was a weird freak of a bargain I think, as I've not seen them nearly that cheap again. The guy was desperate to get rid as he was leaving the country.
Have a look through avforums, it seems just the fronts are going for £150-£200 ish.

Nice one :)

I plan on getting a nice decent amp to compliment them and better speaker cable. Right now I use cheap cable and a cheapy Yamaha HTR-5550 iirc. Does the job though...

But I want some Denon love lol.

I've been exchanging emails...

hiya i'm selling all my hifi bits as i no longer use it, perfect for use, just i have not anywhere to set it up and like i said i just don't use it any more

regards

oh and yeah can do quick demo, got loads of cd's but hey bring one you know and away we go

So I sent back...

Hi Paul,

Thanks for the email :)

Sounds cool mate, might have to bring my latest and favourite album, Teletubbies Greatest Hits 5

Did you have a figure in mind to end it early?

Could drop a deposit off tomorrow and then pay the rest off/pick them up next weekend :)

Cheers,
Jake

He said

yeah 150 quid i reckon, they're 349 new and these are pretty good only 1 mark

and you're welcome tue night for a listen, i'll chuck a rough system together

regards

Paul

I'm inclined to say yes to £150 because...

You see people buying full systems for £200 but thats a case of being in the right place at the right time...

They are the same brand, colour, style as my current bookshelfs, so will all match (I'm weird like that)

He seems genuine, he's into his hifi by the looks of it too and is happy to demonstrate them to me as well.

I think £150 is fair, some missions I was bidding on went for £170 the other day.

Thoughts?

£150 seems reasonable to me, looking around...decent floorstanders seem to be around this price, plus they'll match my current stuff so it makes them more inviting...

I wonder what other gear he has, might have to do a bargain :D

Very nice! I've been looking at these. What did you pay in the end?
You can't rip out that decorating, the speakers match your fireplace! :p

£150 and a £20 drink for dropping them off to me :)

He said the speakers have 'shot' in the bottom so you need to warm them up first before hammering them, and thats why they are so heavy.

Can someone explain what 'shot' is please? :)

Probably filled with lead shot/beads instead of sand for stability, which also probably helps tighten up the bass a little.

Ah ok, cool stuff :)

Can't wait to get these bad boys fired up! Need to sort myself out some decent cable, better than the cheap crap I've got at the mo!

Interesting they have black fronts! Not seen a pair like that before. They are pretty weighty, and iirc have a bung at the bottom aswell. They benefit being away from walls, would be interested if you bi-amp them or not. Mine have always been bi-amped so dunno how much difference it actually makes!

Yes I wasn't expecting the black fronts either...would've preferred the wooden finish all over but it doesn't bother me really, if anything they will look more subtle now. But due to this finish it's the first set of speakers I think looks better with the grills on!

I plan on bi-wiring them yes, that's how my current speakers are :)
