Hey well my 285gtx just died, barely 2 years old. Just like my 8800GTX died barely 2 years old so I'm certain something in my pc is killing these gpus now but either way I'm going to get my psu checked out and upgrade to a sandy bridge and now need yet another new gpu.

So what would you guys recommend? My budget is more just for what ever works. I want to be able to max out the games I play but I don't want to pay for power I don't need so i'm not looking to max crysis, but just general games like shogun 2, bf3 etc. So what do you guys recommend? Haven't followed gpu's properly in years.

:EDIT:

Oh yeah and it's a BFG "lifetime" warranty 285GTX. PAH go **** them selves, makes me very angry that I'm having to fork out yet more money because they folded.

Mmm, was of the impression that the 480gtx wasn't a huge difference to the 285gtx that I used to have?

Surfing the interwebz seems to suggest a 570gtx is needed for bf3 to be maxed out at 1920x1200? This is irritating as I know that when bf3 comes out there will probably be a new range out and everything will be cheaper but I need to buy this gpu within the next 2 weeks.

It's a fair bit faster in some games though if you are thinking for the future i would say get a 6950 and unlock the extra shaders for £200.(if you want Nvidia then go for a GTX570)

Well I don't really have a problem with spending up to £300 and it looks like the 570 is the best performer for the money. However like you said unlocking a 6950 does save quite a bit of cash for not much performance loss compared to the 570.

Unlocking isn't 100% successful though is it?

And both of them aren't far apart in terms of performance. But ofc you cant judge by this one site... but it gives you the general idea.

oh and here is a comparison chart of your old card to the GTX 480

There really isn't a lot in it between the 480gtx and 570gtx. I shall have to look further into it. Might be a good buy.

Yeah I think the SoC 480 is ok... just a few concerns on the problems people are posting.

I'd probably go for a normal 480 GTX personally to avoid the issues on the Soc ones.

Get the Gigabyte 480 SE for £202, runs cool and quiet, it's around the same speed as a 570 but with the added bonus of more memory which will help in certain games at your resolution.

I can't believe anyone would opt for anything different at that price range. True you could get a 6950 and flash it to a 6970 but the 480 is just as quick as the 6970 anyway!

Having just done a bit more looking it appears I was right before and the 480gtx is "ludicrously hot, loud..." that kind of puts me off a little. But the price difference is substantial also.
