Spec me a si-fi Series......

I got the first season of Babylon 5 to see what it was all about....Now I'm a BSG fan and come from the TNG/DS9 days as well and I felt Babylon 5 was too cheesy and too weak! I could see how it would have its own following but it's nowhere near the levels of BSG/Firefly etc.

The first season of B5 was trash compared to the Shadow War story arc.

Everyone to their own :), but it is a bit unsual for a ST:TNG and DS9 fan (especially if you are of that era like me) not to like Babylon 5. In many ways DS9 was a rip off of B5. At its time it was a multi award winning TV program.

All I can suggest is that you watch season 2 and 3 of B5 as that is where the story really kicks off. Season 1 basically sets the scene for what is to come. Season 1 can be more appreciated after you have watched the entire thing. Babylon 5 has a much more epic story line than any of the Star Treks, or BSG. I would say B5 has a fan base not all that far away from Star Trek and miles larger than BSG, Firefly and the like. Although if you like Sci-Fi you tend to like all these series (as I do) but you do tend to have favourites, in my case its B5, Farscape and ST:TNG.

As all things in life though, people like and dislike different things.

Not original music, but just an idea of some of the battles :)

The Whitestars were just awesome :) Everything in Babylon 5 was huge, the capitol ships really are huge at miles long. The Earth tech is particulary interesting with spinning gravitational sections as seen in the Omega class destroyers. God im being very geeky now :(

I should point out that the CGI on recent B5: The Lost Tales was done by the artists that did BSG. Shame the DVD wasn't any good. I think the opening scene in the video above is from that. Foundation imaging that did the CGI in the first few season of B5 also did the CGI for later seasons of ST : Voyager.

Does season 2 require knowledge of S1 happenings to be fully enjoyed?

You could probably get away without it. Although season 1 does hint at an awful lot of what is to come. Its the scope of the story that makes B5. At a bare minimum watch season 2,3,4 and the last episode of 5 "Sleeping in Light". Season 5 was a bit too much filler as the series was going to be axed after season 4 was finished and was taken up again at the last moment (after the story was mostly told). The episode "Sleeping in Light" was made as the finale during season 4 production but was held to the end of season 5 when it was taken up again. To be fair the last few run out episodes of season 5 aren't that bad, but on the whole its not as good as the previous seasons.

Not really. Season one was just a bunch of standalone episodes.

There are some references, but nothing you can't figure out.

I don't really agree with that, there is an awful lot set up in season 1 but it is done in quite a subtle way. There are a few stand alones like TKO but a lot do link directly to the overall story arc (which is were B5 differs to other Sci-Fi), i would say that the season 1 episodes "And the Sky Full of Stars", "A Voice in the Wilderness 1 and 2", "Babylon Squared" and "Chrysalis" were all fairly pivotal episodes with regards to the entire series. I suppose everyone gets something different out of what they watch and I am a bit biased as I really like season 1 :)

I've just started Firefly, really enjoying it so far.

Also quite a fan of Stargate Universe, real shame it doesn't seem to have any future past the current season. :(

I love Stargate Universe, but I think it suffered by not having much in the way of action for a long time. Stargate SG-1 and Atlantis both had stuff going on most episodes [cheesy or not]. Universe spent most of the first series dallying.

The writing was great and enjoyed it all so far, but I can see the other point of view.
