6950 vs 560 ti...

480 SOC? looks very nice. Thanks for throwing that in there. Makes is all the more difficult to choose!! That's a better card than the other two you think?

The GTX480 is around 6970 speeds (the 6970 was originally conceived by AMD to match the 480), and as a result an entirely stock 6950 is a few percentage points slower. However, it unlocks to a 6970, negating the performance difference.

I would have thought the performance difference between the two to be unnoticeable to be honest, am still looking for overclocked benchies but considering you get 6970 performance out of the 6950 very easily I would have though the two cards would be relatively equal. Personally, I would go 6950, as the heat output and power consumption of the GTX480 put me off (consumes almost 500w when fully stressed ie Furmark).

As others have said, avoid the 560 at this point. both the 6950 and 480 are faster, regardless of overclocking. It's at the wrong price bracket now.

I can easily use 900mb++ on my 1gb card at 1920x1200 and it isn't very often I check the memory usage so I'd guess it max's out at times. Next card will be 1.5gb minimum

I too find myself in a very similar situation to this....I ruled out the 560 and am torn between the 480 and the 6950. Does anyone know what the success rate for flashing the 6950 to the 6970 is?

Gigabyte 480 Special edition would be my choice, bargain at its current price of £202.49.

Will run cool and quiet due to the 3rd party cooler, as quick as a 6970 and no farting around with BIOS flashing.

All the Revision 1's are at least able to unlock all the shaders, most are flashable to 6970.

The flashing process takes about 90 seconds with wizzards flash files, about 3 minutes if you want to manually do it.
If you can install a driver then how hard is it to click on a batch file?

If you like green teams then get the 480 soc.
If you like the red corner flash a Revision 1 6950.

It's as simple as that as they both perform about the same.

Sucess rate isn't 100%, tho is it very high (>80%). As I mentioned before I know of atleast 3 rev 1 cards that won't sucessfully flash to 6970 performance stable.

Techpowerups Test Results updated until Feb 1
Link

Full 6970 flash(not unlocked shader flash!)
471 Cards tested.
456 unlock fully to 6970.
14 unlock to 6970 but rendering errors.
1 did not unlock.

You can add my 2 6950's to the success rate too;).
