Tonight's Moon

Good work guys, I've got a bit of cloud cover here so I've gone out yet. Might take a look see in a bit but not sure I'm going to get a window to shoot it.

Yeah, the massive black clouds came over and it went all hazy. There were street lights in the way, then a house and I had about 15 minutes of photos to take. As I hadn't done it before I tried various settings. There's a lot of noise in a few of them, so I lost a bit of detail removing it.

Right, now where's the 600mm lens I now want :D

Wish i had a better lens for this, have to keep reminding myself that the urge / want to actually take moon pics happens so rarely it would be a waste.

Guys, what is the best way to picture the Moon (or any other objects at night for that matter)? Is it simply a larger lens = win?

I have one shot (almost embarrassed to upload it) taken on a Nikkor 18-70mm lens, on a Nikon D80 set to Night mode. :)

How can I get more detail? Are there some specific settings I should be changing?

Thanks! Be gentle! lol. :)

Yeah, more zoom = win on moon photography :(
Set camera to manual, set Fstop to F8 - F11 or so
Then start playing with shutter speeds until you get what your after, my pic was 150th of a sec if i remember.

Thanks for the quick reply. Right, I'm off to google Fstop and Shutter speeds. lol. I think that was my problem, most pics (I snapped about 20) were leaving the lens open too long and I ended up with just a ball of light and zero detail (even with Lightroom adjustments).

Hmmm now to buy a lens with more zoom!

not bad for one of Nikon's cheaper telephoto lenses (doubly so considering it was half price from a certain auction site :p )

Not as nice as some of the above, just what I could get with the kit I have - Fuji UVIR, 1.4x Kenko 300 TC on Nikkor 500/8 reflex. It's got some near IR thrown in, not that it's necessarily noticeable.

e: dialled it back a notch to avoid eyes bleeding.

I found (whilst flicking between settings, to try everything :D) that ISO200 @400mm got me a nice balance of detail and light. I did get more detail on other settings, but a lot was blown out. I didn't have a chance to try a higher F stop than F8 because clouds came and ate the moon :( I think I may have (only guessing as I've never done this before tonight!) that I may have gotten a more rich photo with F10-F11.

Some nice shots here!

Here's my attempt.

A bit noisy :( But I don't have a proper tripod with me.
Canon 450D using the 55-250mm @ 250mm.
