Took two different routes today and I was wondering which is best fuel wise:

A) Through London, 24miles took 1hr20mins

B) Motorway, 70miles took 1hr.

Im thinking B as its less start and stops... It's for a 1.4 golf.

Thanks

Depends entirely which route through London & what time of day.

Even in my truck, I'd probably opt for A.

Route A has a shockingly low average speed of 18.46mph. I could cycle faster than that over that distance!!

pence per mile though taking into account the car you're in I'd say A is going to be the most economical as long as you dont treat every set of traffice lights as the start of a grand prix :D

LOL.

Is there a way of calculating the actual cost in fuel?

depends on conditions, traffic flow etc.

My truck would do more than double the MPG on the longer motorway run than it would manage in stop - start traffic - especially of the London variety! .....

Sods law would dictate the Motorway to be crawling too mind..... :D

You need to know your average mpg (and obviously distance as well)

Distance / MPG = gallons used.
gallons used * 4.546 = litres used
litres used * price per litre you paid = total cost.

For example:
if you average 40mpg on journey B and paid 1.30 per lite for fuel

70 miles / 40 mpg = 1.75 gallons
1.75 gallons * 4.546 = 7.956 litres
7.956 litres * £1.30 = total journey cost you £10.34
