We are planning to move from East Midlands to Norway and we are not quite sure how to do it when it comes to our furniture and all that.

I have been thinking about using a removals company but not sure which (and a lot of the sites look like they are not very updated). We also thought maybe to rent a van ourselves but it depends what the rules are (21 and 2 years of driving).

It's about one room worth of furniture and a lot of expensive fragile stuff.

Has anyone used a removals company they can recommend? And are there any other ways?

Thanks :)

I would forget the furniture and take the expensive stuff over by car, find a really decent size estate car imo.
Just buy new furniture over there.

I knew someone who moved from UK to Greece and they had a lot of damage inside a sealed container. Its very very difficult to protect things that well that there is no risk when these things bounce around on the high seas.

We have thought about maybe just leaving the furniture. But not quite sure if estate would be big enough for the essentials.

Did they use a removals company (so the company chose to move it all by container) or was it something else?

What I have in mind when I think removals is someone driving the stuff to Norway and not sending it off.

Local van rental companies can be less restrictive on ages / experience then large national companies.

There is a company DFDS Seaways is based in Immingham, they sail from Immingham (East Coast) to Brevik (Norway) 2 days a week. It's a freight vessel and can take a limited number of passengers i believe.

You can google "DFDS Torline" and their website is available with info on the sailings

Yes a removals company, they drop off the container if you have space, you pack it or can get them to (at cost) then they take it away and get it to your destination, ideally the opposite happens at the other end.

I think you can do the hire a van they drive over unpack etc stuff but thats a lot.

Hire your own van is ofc an option, but you will have it for quite a few days and its quite possible the cost will outweigh the cost of furniture to buy new stuff.

If you are moving over with work then there might be an arrangement in place for shipping large items?

When my sister moved abroad they left/sold most of their furniture as it just wasnt worth the effort of shipping it.

Oh, don't think that's a good option then.

Aha! I actually used to work with sending people over by ferry using DFDS (Newcastle-Stavanger) but that was just passenger ones so didn't cross my mind that they might still do other ones. Will definitely give them a call :) Will also check out smaller van rental companies.

Sort of. But I'm Norwegian so it's not like they are placing me there :)
