I'm really not sure what I think of all this. Whilst I don't beleive the tinfoil hat brigade and feel the intentions of the coalition are honourable, I'm still not sure I think the present course of action is really that sensible.

The Americans already seem to be trying to distance themselves from it, looking to hand over control already?

They simply know that if it goes **** up they don't want to be holding the torch, furthermore the UN res doesn't mandate that Gaddafi step down, and with the NFZ being in place and taking out tanks etc there is no guarantee that the rebels can finish the job.

It's going to be an interest few days/weeks, and even today already the arab league head has been quoted of not agreeing with the implantation of the NFS, that line will be ran by all arab press and the opinion could degrade.

I think you're way to hung up on the terminology surrounding a 'no fly zone' especially since the vast majority of it has come from media speculation leading up to the resolution.

I'm not, it's just doesn't seem to be what it is wrapped up to be.

The resolution clearly makes ground targets viable, it has to just to clear the air defences, but again, the resolution clearly opens up other ground targets as being viable under it.

Armed conflict is war, occupation or subjugation isn't always the goal. In this case our war with the Libyan regime is as a police action against it's military to stop it murdering it's citizens.

Why only Lybia?

They've done the damage they need or wanted to.

Anything else can be done quietly now I would suspect? There won't be much mind you if it is still no boots on the ground policy.

I agree, after a little more reading America are still going to be helping us in the air and sea, its just if things go upside down it will be our problem.

Mind saying that i've never seen so many nations work together so quickly in combined operations.

+1

French have been quite up for it, hopefully them.

Hopefully Westminister sees the benefit in this, and lets the French have it.

I dont think we'll take the lead here. The government certainly wont be offering as they wouldn't be doing themselves any favours at all.

at least some of those who voted for it, or who abstained (eg. Russia) did not expect the coalition forces to behave the way they are doing.

Russia and China ENTIRELY expected the coalition to take the action they have taken. If they had vetoed the resolution they would have been complicit to genocide and vilified by the international community. Now they can sit back with moral superiority and try to stick the knife into their adversaries. Make no mistake, China and Russia are NOT our friends.

Why only Lybia?

Because it's not in our national interest to intervene elsewhere?

The main reason the French are so eager to act is probably to combat test the Rafale fighter. It has not done very well in the export market unlike the Mirage 2000. Funnily enough Libya was going to buy some but the sale did not materialise.

He's been buying stuff for years, including us up until a year ago iirc.

Maybe less.

Anyway, I bet he has more than what the rebels have kicking about.

It's the shoulder launched stuff thats the issue for 'us' but then again unless you know how to use a gun / launcher and practice you might aswell start throwing popcorn at your enemy.

Just been on al jazeera gaddafi has started dishing out weapons to over a million libyan pro gaddafi supporters

I guess that makes them all legitimate targets as per the UN resolution?

If tanks and infantry are a threat to our aircraft then so are armed civilians.

Wasn't this the plan from day 1? I don't think Obama can risk any US casualties:o

Firestar, what sort of tracking/guidance capabilities do the shoulder launched weapons have? theirs I mean, not ours.. or are they heat seeking or what?
