iPhone 5 and iPad 3 - what can apple do next?

Come to think of it, I would trade having 4g for not being locked into an O2 contract with only 500mb data per month. Talk about crippling.

Incidentally, 4g is around in a few places. I'm using it now.

I hope Apple don't move to a fat 4.3" display for the iPhone 5. The HTC models carrying that size screen look way too large for one handed use.

Depends how big your hands are really. . .

Bring on the large screen! 3.5" is too small and outdated. I want a decent upgrade visually from my 3GS. I'm really glad I did not get a iPhone 4, the res is nice but it's too small still.

It is still primarily a phone, what size screen would you prefer? Surely not something as big as the samsung tab?

Boots just got RFID (NFC) readers in near me. (Waterloo Station)

Andriod Desire HD has an RFID chip in.. activated when 2.3 fw is put out ota.

Looking forward to seeing what iP4gs/iP5 truely has to offer... wonder if they'll have enough QA this time round?

Personally I would like at least a 4" which can fit easy into the iphone dimensions without the phone itself being any bigger. From what I can tell this is on the cards anyway so I welcome it.

If it's just a "rinse, repeat, faster spin cycle" I'm not interested. That's all iPhone has been from the 3G onward and it's all the iPad3 will be... Innovation has been lacking in the iPhone department IMO and if we're being fair the iPad really is just a bigger iPhone... lets not kid ourselves here...

It's just a shame that the Android tablets suck so hard...

Super fast syncing would be good.

Jestures built into iPad.

iOS5 to have a real overhaul, maybe a seperate os for the iPad from the phone..iPOS5? lol...donest have to be a huge different jsut maybe a proper home screen/ widgets that make use of teh extra screen space.

The screen size is good as it is... Would hate it to be any bigger... All the other phones with bigger screens just look massive and bulky...

Some of the jailbroken features actually added to iOS would be nice. But I think they have come as far as they might be able to go (for me anyway... it just seems it will be lighter, faster, thinner, more battery, better camera?)

Not for me it wouldn't, it is ridiculous in-efficient. especially when you can just have a dock and it slots on.

How is it inefficient?

Every single iPad I've seen outside of an Apple store has a cover on, you can't dock with a cover...
Wireless charging/IO would fix this and I don't want to clutter my house with docking stations.

Docks are for desks, the whole point of an iPad is to use it away from a desk :)

Besides, wireless charging is cool, the technology is ready and Apple needs something WOW in order to sell iPad3.

Whilst you still need a cable to connect and transferr everything...wirelss charging wont be anyway practical. Also god knows how long it would take to charge the iPads battery via the wirelss route!

Not really, the iPhone 4 was massively different to the 3G - different shape, better screen, better camera, front facing camera - not really sure what other logical changes that can be made tbh

I'm not sure I agree - sure, they changed the hardware - it has a brighter screen but it still does the same stuff the same way. Still has the same icons, still connects to your mac/pc the same way, still uses iTunes, has all the same apps. I'm not judging it as being a poor phone - just not any different.

I've said it before - Apple have designed what is about the most intuitive user friendly and graceful UI that is out there - but - I think they have designed themselves into a corner - if they change it, they run the risk of it becoming less intuitive, less user friendly. They're between a rock and a hard place - so they keep changing the hardware, all people really see is the UI after that 'new gadget' buzz wears off all they have is 'new hardware' with the 'same old OS' on it. iPad is well on the way to the same place IMO, not the least because if they put something like OSX on them they'll be losing customer demand for their MACBook products.

At least with Android there are recognisable changes (whether they're good or bad is in many ways irrelevant) so the end user really feels like they're getting a new experience not just the same experience on newer hardware. Hard place to be, in Apple, and still demonstrate innovation.

I dont see the iPhone ever moving away from iTunes tbh, letting you sync using standard windows for example makes it less specific to Apple something I doubt they'd ever want to go down the road of

As for the rest that's all software related which is kinda the reason for the thread, from a hardware perspective now other than changing the guts every year I think they'll be running out of ideas pretty soon :(

My prediction is Hardware ray tracing if not next generation after Iphone 5 the one after that. I would guess about a 20% chance the Ipad 3 will have hardware ray tracing and about a 80% chance the Ipad 4 will.

The Ipad 3 and Iphone 6 GPU will be around 20 times more powerful core for core GPU wise then a SGX543 in theory.

Because wireless charging is only 40% efficient.

it's no different from a dock, you can only wireless charge from several millimetres away. You get a charging pad and the device has to be sat ontop of it.

Personally I'd rather use an Ipad with out a cover and use a dock, then stick it in a cover for transporting. If you wnat to keep it scratch free can always get all-round plastic sheet stuff, like for the screen.

Pretty much what I do, can't stand the cases! Only for transportation.
