New to water cooling

Ok, my CPU is running far too hot again. So I'm going down the WC route. I'm scared to death about WC and not doing it right. So my question is...

To start with I'm thinking of getting

Will I need anything else other than the above like fluid or what ever it is?

Also I have this case

Will it fit in ok do you think? I think I need to get a new PSU as well as I have far too many cables coming out of mine.

that is not what you would call water cooling.....it is a closed loop cpu cooler
proper watercooling would consist of tubes,blocks,pump,rads,res etc etc
if you are scared to do it then this is probabley perfect for you.....there is no chance of it leaking unless its faulty and if you get a couple of good fans for it you will get decent results but a high end air cooler will most likely do just as good a job but take up a bit more room in your case.....proper watercooling will give you vastly improved temps over this though.....

Ok mate, thanks for clearing that up for me.

I did think it strange as when looking at watercooling I saw like you mentioned rads, pumps etc and it did confuse me!

I like the idea of it not leaking as I don't want it leaking down on to my 580!

Thing is I do have a good air cooler, but my CPU when OC is running at 80-95 degrees even after re applying thermal paste so I was hoping something like this would drop the temps down a little bit.

Might look in to proper watercooling though.

95c is nuclear meltdown temps...i would get you chip overclock lowered till you get that sorted...what do you get at stock temps running idle?
my 920 C0 (not D0) runs at 28-29c idle and thats overclocked to 3.8ghz and the C0 is the hot 920...do you run speedstep also as theres no point in your chip being at 4.2ghz if its sitting idle....i run a tfc 360 rad with 6 120mm noctuas in push/pull config for my cooling

Hi mate, at stock I get around 30-40 I think it is. I had issues since adding my 580 before the 580 at 4.2 it used to run at 60 under load.

No idea what speedstep is mate, my OC is a pre OC from OcUK ( tongue twister! ) Might try manually over clocking it although I tried the other day and it didn't boot :(

I think I'll put my CPU back to stock tonight and see how it goes.
 
yeah the heat will be rising from the 580 and conducting on your cpu heatsink...... the h70 will make a big difference to you then.....if you want an easy life get this and a couple of fans with good static pressure for your h70 radiator...something like a noctua or apache etc etc...saves you going fully down the water cooling route till you feel more confident about it......if you do go h-70 with 2 fans make sure they suck in from the back of the case so it would be fan>120mm rad>fan....this is know as push pull because you are pushing air through the rad with 1 fan and pulling it through with the other...it is very effective...just make sure any other fans in your case arent fighting against it so for example if you had a fan at the front of the case sucking in you would turn this round so it was now exhausting the air from the back..... i hope this makes sense to you

speedstep is a bios option for intel chips so that when running idle it automatically turns the multiplier down for example my chip is sitting at 180 bclk x 21 multiplier which gives 3.8ghz...... with speedstep enabled on idle the pc would automatically drop it to say 180 x 12 so it now runs at 2.16ghz but as soon as it had a task it would ramp back up to 3.8ghz till the task was done then back to 2.16ghz......this helps keep your chip cool and prolongs the life of it....download coretemp and it will show you what ratios you are running and if speedstep is enabled you will see it fluctuate on the multi

Thanks for taking the time to reply mate that makes a lot of sense. If I do go down that route then I'll have to turn all my fans around as I have them all blowing in. Come to think about it I have the side of my case off which has 2 fans so that can't help!

I ran a H50 for a bit and loved it but wished id gone for a 70.

I was worried about leaking and such but when I saw the H50 loked up a few things there has been 1 or 2 leaks in its time and even then corsair funded the guys build :P
 
Brilliant thanks. So you don't need any coolant or thermal paste this literally comes with everything you need? Ordering it tomo :D

no coolant needed...it is a closed loop liquid cooler which means you cant and dont need to do anything with it...it comes with 3 strips of thermal paste already on it which im told is quiet good stuff but i had a h-50 a few years back and changed the paste for artic silver 5 at the time....now i would change it for mx-4 but only because ive got it to hand and thats what i use....if you dont want to change it then dont mate it will give you great results either way ;)

Hi mate, so just for clarity you're saying have every fan facing outwards so it pushes the air out of the case apart from the two on the h70 which will be blowing inside the case?
 
hi chk4, just had a look at your case and i would have it so all fans are sucking cool air from outside the case apart from the big one at the top which will exhaust the warm air.... so side fan,front fan and fans on h-70 sucking in to the case and 200mm top fan exhausting the warm air....thats what id do mate

Thanks for that mate, I saw you replied just before I installed it so took your advice. When I ran prime95 before after 5 mins tops my PC would reach over 100 and it would turn of. Instantly it would be at 85-90 and work up until it turned off. Now I've been running it for over 20 mins and on full load it's at 80 which is a huge different in my opinion. Still a little hot but better than it was.

Idle is about 40-50 which again is a huge difference as standard it would be at around 70-80.

That is way too hot still though, for a CPU. Id be looking at how youre mounting it and things like that as those temps cant be right if all is installed correctly, surely? No offence to you ofcourse, just really baffling.
 
chk4...can you give me some info?
1. what i7 do you have
2. what voltage are you running it at
3. do you have speedstep enabled so that it only clocks up when you need it
4. what paste are you using

4.2 is quiet a high clock and to many extra volts would cause excess heat...maybe we can get it cooler yet....
also when you tighten down the four cpu cooler nuts did you tighten them down equally and not spin one down then the other etc etc?
these need to be spun down equally so that there is even pressure across the face of the cpu...this is important
