So i built a pc back in december, heres the list of components bought:-

MSI GeForce GTX 480 1536MB GDDR5 PCI-Express Graphics Card
Intel Core i7 950 3.06GHz (Bloomfield) (Socket LGA1366)
Crucial RealSSD C300 128GB 2.5" SATA 6Gb/s Solid State Hard Drive (CTFDDAC128MAG-1G1)
Gigabyte GA-X58A-UD3R Intel X58 (Socket 1366) DDR3 Motherboard
Corsair HX 850W ATX Modular SLI Compliant Power Supply (CMPSU-850HXUK)
Microsoft Windows 7 Home Premium - Retail (Full Version)(GFC-00025)
Patriot Viper 6GB (3x2GB) DDR3 PC3-12800C8 1600MHz Low Latency Triple Channel (PVT36G1600LLK)
Antec 902 Nine Hundred Two (V3) Ultimate Gaming Case (with USB3.0 Support) - Black
Corsair Hydro H70 High-Performance CPU WaterCooler (Socket LGA775/LGA1155/LGA1156/LGA1366/AM2/AM3)
Seagate Barracuda LP 2TB SATA-II 32MB Cache - OEM (ST32000542AS)
Razer Naga 5600dpi MMO Laser Gaming Mouse
Belkin N52TE Gaming Tool (F8GFPC200EA)
Sony Optiarc AD-7260S 24x DVD±RW SATA ReWriter (Black) - OEM

Now this was running fine, had no problems atall, i then decided to upgrade to 2 gtx580s:-
MSI GeForce GTX 580 OC 1536MB GDDR5 PCI-Express Graphics Card x2

In the same system, this also ran fine until i switched to using 2 displays @1080p from the one i had originally, at which point i started to get display driver stopped responding and has restarted. I have tried google to find a solution for this and it has come to my attention i may not have a powerful enough PSU(?) I did also run a furmark test and upload it with results here http://www.ozone3d.net/benchmarks/furmark_score_190.php?id=154728 and the results seem a bit low to me, but I'm kinda new to this.

This display driver crashing happens quite often, when playing games or even just watching videos or on youtube, it will happen on average every 3/4 hours. I have tried updating drivers and such but nothing has changed. So i thought I'd come on here and see if there's anything else i can do without buying a 1200w PSU and just hoping it will fix it.

Thanks, Deren

EDIT: Any tests that are needed that can help just ask and i will run them

850w should easily be enough to power that system, even with the SLI 580's.

I'm probably wrong, but it may be worth going back to older drivers possibly? Have you OC'd the 580's?

I haven't over-clocked anything from how it came, only thing i have changed is the fans on the 580s to cap at 85% quite early on (65C) to prevent it heating up. I could try older drivers but i don't remember what driver I had when i wasn't getting the errors, is there any way I can find this out from logs on the pc or will i just have to test different ones?

I have the newest drivers from nvidia and have tried the newest beta ones too, currently running 267.31 (beta)

i install my games to storage drives with shortcuts to them on my desktop which keeps my ssd just for the operating system.....i often do a fresh install with the latest drivers and this way i dont lose all my stuff or have to move it when i choose to...ive had problems in the past with wrighting over old drivers with new ones...there supposed to be able to do this but i have had the drivers not responding thing a few times...with a fresh install there perfect everytime....

ok thanks, i was under the impression that installing games to my SSD would make them perform better, i tested this with only one game (FFXIV) and it seemed to give me a few extra fps, is this possible or was it just a human error with me not testing properly. i shall do this refresh once i work out how to move all my games to my HDD

An SSD won't increase your FPS. It decreases the load times of the game textures and zoning etc. If you have a large enough SSD then there is no problem putting games on it to benefit from the speed. My 160gb ssd has all my games on it atm.

yeah im sure it will give you some increase in FPS but your running 2 x 580s in sli.....how much more FPS do you want...will your eye notice the difference between 100 FPS and 103 FPS? i dont think so...... i sure im right in saying its better for your ssd if its not full anyway......

for me...keeping it empty makes it simple for a fresh install....and a fresh install with latest drivers = very responsive snappy pc

He has a 128GB SSD. W7 takes what, 7gb or whatever it is? So that leaves probably 110gb free.
Your right, you shouldn't fill either an HDD or SSD up to full, but that doesn't mean you can't use some of the capacity. My 160gb has 150gb usable space, of which i've used probably 90gb, which leaves me ~40% free. I personally don't let my drives get over 75% full.
My computer hasn't slowed down at all with that stuff on it and realistically, how many times do you reinstall W7 in a month? :O

If your SSD is 40-60gb then sure, OS only but 128 gb is a wee bit different I think.

I also think i'm distracting this thread and me being tired is making me a bit argumentative, in which case I appologise :)

your right it is a bit different with 128gb and 75% is a good measure...what i ment was installing stuff to it like 80gb worth of games...... i install windows as often as once a month or at least every 3 months....sometimes in the past i did have games on there but reinstalling them slows up the process on fresh install so now i have them on storage drive...makes no difference to how the game plays and saves me time and keeps my saves in the game... this is just the way i do it ;)

i do use the ssd drives speed though for extracting files so by the time i re-install it is 60-80% full with movies and downloads which get transfered to a storage drive prior to install or deleted.....doesnt take long as the transfer is from ssd to sata3 2tb drive

i managed to install the OS again after wiping the drive, got all me games working but was having problems with BSOD for the 1st day, but i realised it seemed to be after 30 mins of entering the same game periodically, turns out it was just energy saving settings and since changing that all games so far seem to be running without a single crash.

Everything also seems to be performing better too so thanks for the help :)
