Hello!

My budget is about £350. I have little experience with bass guitars, although I used to play guitar for a few years.

I've been told to look at the Squier Classic/Vibe/Jazz/Precision range. Can anyone explain the differences? Is there anything else I should consider? I'm all ears.

Thanks

As a sound engineer who has heard hundreds and hundreds of bands I can say that the Squier Vintage Modified Jazz Bass (natural) is one of the best sounding basses I've heard. I don't even play bass and I wanted one.

Usually bands use crap guitars, you get used to it. Occasionally they'll have something nice. But after hearing this one band I had to ask the bass player what he was using. I was surpised it was a Squier. But only because I thought it was something more expensive.

All down to taste though, and possible variations in individual instrument quality. Try before you buy if you can.

Thanks. I was just recommended that exact bass by a friend! Definitely taken my interest :)

Going to have a look in town tomorrow and see it in person.

I bought a Squier Affinity Precision, basically so I could be Steve Harris on a budget.

The Affinity series are basses that aren't an exact copy of their Fender forefathers but are modern spec'd updates that give you the "feel." Damn fine instruments and seriously cheap - especially if you get them as a beginners' package with the tasty Fender Rumble 15 bass amp.

Just an update, went for the Squier Vintage Modified Jazz in the end. Should be here on Wednesday. I'll let you know how I get on :)

Without reading other peoples suggestions there is a golden rule I've lived by for 41 years.
The Fender Stratocaster is known as the Swiss Army Knife of guitars and a Fender Precision or Jazz is known as the Swiss Army Knife of basses.
I have a Precision by my side right now.

What about a Rickenbacker? Lemme, Geddy Lee and Geezer Butler can't be wrong, can they?

Edit/ damn it!, just checked the price of the RB 4003's, £1500-2000! That'll be slightly out of budget then.:o

I have Squier Affinity P Bass. It does the job well for a reasonable budget. I just wanted something to record basic tracks at home with but I think it's a very capable piece of kit.

Aye, sound advice here (excuse the terrible pun).
