Units make my cpu cry :( Check out the bottleneck!

Scene without units - 99% GPU usage

Some units - GPU usage plummets to 45%

When units are moving and colliding with each other it again plummets to 36% ( and i have seen lower!)

Cheers for that - I know I need to change my GFX card for sure so just umming and ahhing - have to admit pretty much all my gaming has moved over to the consoles but it games like Total War that keep my PC in use - that and my stupidly large Steam library, I get owned by sales...

Just keeping an eye on nVidia performance as I was gonna get that Gigabyte 480GTX with the better cooler while its on offer but it seems some are having so right proper issues with it and Total War - I assume nVidia will be updating drivers to combat it sooner rather than later...

Avoid Nvidia with this game for now - hopefully for Nvidia users drivers will fix the stutter/framerate problems. It would be a waste of money if they don't though. At least the Q9450 in your system will be up for the job.

Get the game, see how it runs, and then upgrade if you need to.

It might surprise you, the recommended specs are well over the top.

Yeah I was following Jono8s experiences earlier in the week so that was stalling my 480GTX purchases - I know its just drivers (hopefully a safe assumption), but I dont want to shell out for a new card when Im not sure when those might appear

It should work just fine if you overclock them decently.
Excellent, thats good to hear - to be honest coming from a PS3 Im sure I wont be as critical as some (so used to jaggies!!!).

I have to be honest Im not really clued up on the whole overclocking thing, though my system is pretty much primed for it (have a MO VFD to control fans for temps with dallas temp probes; spot fan for the RAM; a TRUE with 2 fans and a old school Stacker case with the side case fan blowing over the mobo). What do you mean by decently? I do need to revamp my cooling as its more hardcore (i.e. loud) than what I now want...

Sounds like theres a good chance my system isnt that old hat (loathed to upgrade it do to the reduced usage it gets nowadays) - will pick up the game this week then :)

i don't think it is a graphics card problem. It is clear that the 480 can run this game without a sweat.

Either my system cannot keep up or there is a problem with the game. My GPU usage sinks to 36% when lots of units are moving about fighting on screen...

The thing is, it is not just me. There are people on the official forum who have i7 980x's and 580's in SLI that get the same problem.

The guy with the 580's said if he used both cards, GPU usage went to like 25% or less..

Framerate just plummets to like 15-20 when lots of units are moving about e.t.c.

You might be lucky and it may run great for you but you may not.

I will wait to see if the big patch with DX11 makes any big differences.

What settings are you using? My framerate stays pretty smooth even with most things on Ultra (but with only HDR and Vignette checked). I have a Q6600 @ 3.2 and a 460 GTX. Dropping down from Ultra to High on unit detail and shadows helps quite a bit.

I'm really sorry to ask this guys, as it smacks of laziness on my part... but now that people have been able to check the game out, I'd like to ask TW veterans if it's a worthwhile purchase? If you've played any of the previous TW games before, where does Shogun 2 rank, or how does it compare?

Basically, I trust the opinions of you fellas far more than the majority of review sites out there! I'm itching for some Total Warring, and would love to buy this, but am a little hesitant after not liking ETW out of the box.

I've been playing since RTW. Medieval 2 was the best up until Shogun. The only downer about Shogun is that it's only based in Japan :p I love TW games for the mere fact that I can conquer the world (or at least a good portion of it)!

Everything is maxed apart from SSAO. But even having SSAO on/off makes no difference to the minimum framerates and lag that i get when looking at a load of units.

Resolution makes no difference either.

I'm sure it is some kind of bug and will be fixed soon enough.

I will prefer to play it though with DX11 and AA e.t.c anyway.

Maybe I'm really lucky or something, but my frame rate is really stable with everything on Ultra (except Textures) with HDR, hardware shadows (makes shadows use the gpu) & Vignette checked. Ticking DOF/SSAO causes significant frame rate loss though.

Well affter the nightmare I had trying to get the game to install on my PC I reformated in the end and this time it installed with out any problems, And I am really glad I stuck with it this game kicks ass :D

Running it everything maxed out apart from DOF/SSAO @2560x1600 seems to run really smooth.

Welcome to the wonderful world of CA.

I stopped buying on release day with empire, and now buy for a fraction of the price half a year - year later and by that point thats as patched as it gets before they give up.

(unless it turns into european swords again :o)

Managed to set the OcUK group as my clan at last! Come join us, only 2 so far :)

Sadly i think my campaign may get crushed, I'm at war and sandwiched between 2 massive clans and 3 badly beaten armies!

Seemed to have fixed my framerate slowdown problems by updating my gfx drivers. Having everything on Ultra and it's running smooth as butter even in 2k+ battles.
