I'm currently developing an on-line designer clothing company, I need some advice off potential customers around the UK :)

What brands do you love wearing? What do you hate about some online clothing shops? Do you like wearing quality clothing without the branded price tag? Give me some ideas on how I could develop a business that you'd rather buy from than say USC, Next, Asos . . . would you rather bigger discounts or cheaper/faster delivery?

The brand isn't important to me in some respects.

If I like the look of an M&S jumper I will buy it... If I like the look of a Primark T-shirt I will get it... I have to admit that I don't like brands that are big in your face e.g. hollister etc... which have the brand name across everything as if to say... "oh look at me and the make I am wearing"

The only time a brand will matter is when they produce quality garments. Personally prefer diesel jeans as they last a long time. If I could get the same quality without the little diesel tag on the pocket for a cheaper price then I would.

Bigger discounts over faster delivery.

I've always been a big fan of Animal clothing, It's a local business to here and is spreading worldwide quite quickly! Other than that much like sbi5ar I will buy it if I like the look of it.

I'm one of them people though if I like the product I don't mind paying the price and I'd prefer to have it sooner rather than later.

Brands - H&M, Topman, ordered a few bits from Threadless. I dislike brands where the name is plastered across it, no matter how upmarket it may seem.
I like it when websites show the product fully (front and back views) and give a clear indication of the size and fit. Delivery for cheap is good, and free return if it doesn't fit right.

This +1

Hate buying online when that medium t-shirt might not be a proper medium :(

I always think twice now before ordering clothes online for exactly that reason and to be honest you can get pretty good deals in the sales nowadays.

Personally I like websites that are simple and don't have too big of a collection. Brands wise I like things that are quality, and not made in China so UK, USA, Japan etc.

I'm not too bothered about price as long as it is not extortionate. I buy clothes that will last me so I see the products as an investment not throw away fashion.

I don't really follow trends, I want good quality basics and classics.

I also go online because I want stuff that you don't get on the high street and every tom, dick and harry is wearing. Theres no point selling, Firetrap, Diesel, Bench, G-Star etc etc.

OK brilliant, great replies so far!

How would you like the site layout? Any sites you prefer over others when it comes to usability and good navigation ?

Would you like comfort clothing such as lounge and sleepwear ? If so what types do you prefer ?

What about works clothing such as office shirts and shoes ? Or would you prefer a website on normal clothing :)

Would you like a couple of delivery options, faster or cheaper?

Free returns is defiantly something I'm looking into, I've always been annoyed when something doesn't fit and I have to take time out to return it !

While I'm not really into specific brands, I do like to shop online at Fat Face and Howies (exceptionally well made clothes).

I think that most people are not into specific brands but more types of clothing... i.e. if you like fat face you like a certain type of clothing (there is a slight exception to this rule as some companies while producing similar cloths will give you better quality, like fat face does)

So for the internet business i think you need to decide what types of clothing you're going to be selling...

(hope that made sense :p )

I mainly buy plain t-shirts nowadays, haven't bought a shirt from high street stores such as burtons top man etc for a long long time now. In my opinion they've turned into right nancyboy shops.

I like minimalistic websites... not fussed about seeing male models on the beach wearing a T-shirt... Just a simple front and back view with the option to zoom in on detail i think is good. Also it might be worth to collate all the colors of a particular design as some websites do.

If I was to buy online it would probably be jeans and t-shirts. Not sure about lounge and sleepware... I for one don't wear much to bed ;)

I think this will be down to the business... you need to size up the competition (same goes for the sleepware etc...). Can you fill a niche?

Would you like a couple of delivery options, faster or cheaper?

Yes... A free option also would be nice for those who don't care when it arrives

hope it helps (ofc this is just my opinion)

Edit... Oh and a final thing... Don't sell skinny jeans!!! They annoy the **** outta me :p

Thats what I'm here to find out :) I want to find out what sort of clothes most of you want and how I can keep you buying from my website over others :p

Thanks for all the replies so far sbi5ar, great feedback !

No not really don't really wear sleepwear.

What about works clothing such as office shirts and shoes ? Or would you prefer a website on normal clothing :)!

No i would keep it to normal clothing unless your looking for a certain type of customer.

Would you like a couple of delivery options, faster or cheaper?!

Yes

Free returns is defiantly something I'm looking into, I've always been annoyed when something doesn't fit and I have to take time out to return it !

now this is a good idea and think that more customers would buy as you really need to try things on for the sizes.

Simple, able to choose by either brand or type of clothing. A few sites I like are www.oipolloi.com www.wellgosh.co.uk

Nothing wrong with some smart clothes, as long as it ties in with the website and brand as a whole.

Definitely have some options, personally I like it as cheap as possible but i'm sure a lot of people want thing ASAP.

Sounds good.

Out of interest what brands are you thinking of stocking? Whats the mission behind the site?

I generally as a rule stick to Timberland, for the simple fact that I know what size i'm goin to end up with when it turns up. I've had XXL T-shirts turn up from Asos that are the same size as a medium/large from Timberland, and had jeans/trousers from Fat Face that turn up much smaller than they are supposed to be.

I'm not massive, I have a 44-46 inch chest, 34inch waist, but it seems most of these stores stock clothes for beanpoles, not real people. I haven't actually been able to fit in a pair of 34 inch waist jeans for years!

Awesome, got a good idea what you want from the website. Any particular brands you like whether its for quality, long-last, classics, looks, comfort . . . just mention them here, because I will be meeting up with suppliers very soon and looking into some new lines :)

I've been having the same issue. The problem is that all brand sizes vary, whether its the fit, style or just their own silly way of sizing their clothes. I don't know what I'm going to do with this issue, maybe I can have a "fit type" categorising system to describe sizes as skinny, loose fit or maybe a detailed description tab that will give specific measurements ?

Atleast you would have a free returns option ;) :)

George, Asda.

Jeans for £8, suit for £35 - that'll do me.

I have zero interest in clothes. As long as it fits, it's clean and not a garish colour then I'm happy.
