The Doggy Woggy!

rescue dog Tess........we have had her for 2 years now, she is 7 years old, the previous owners didn't take her out when she was a puppy...

I'd guess that has something to do with it. You're probably enjoying more progress with your puppy because it's a puppy.

Two years and dog is unable to be taken out? Why hasnt he dealt with it sooner?

OP doesn't say it's unable to be taken out, just a pita. A lot of dogs are a pita, and even if your dog isn't a lot of other dogs are a pita.

He also goes on to say he walks it for 40 minutes a day, but again, it is a pita. He says he's taken it to training classes and although well trained, still doesn't like dogs and the trainer said that might just be the way it is.

Really don't understand your attitude.

In 'something helpful to the OP shocker', it could be an idea to try a different dog trainer, they're not all equal. Also bringing friends with their dogs into your home may be an idea, strictly controlled of course.

Finally - don't get tense when you see other dogs, you dog will react to your anxiety and reinforce it's own fears.

Maybe 40mins isn't enough or maybe a more varied walk. Like i say Toby always chases other dogs and its very embarrassing. At the weekend though we were in Castleton, where he hasn't been before, on a short lead and he was good as gold.

Nothing in the OP or the rest of this thread suggests that.

we can look after her, the only problem is that she can't get on with others, she is mentaly confused, she will bark, growl but waggle her tail.......she wants to play but she has no idea whats so ever to khow how to play.

I'd guess that has something to do with it. You're probably enjoying more progress with your puppy because it's a puppy.

then how is that fair on the rescue dogs, if it wasn't for us she would be put down........we have done the right thing taking her on, she brings joy to our life, every time we come home she will say hello just like a little puppy. Its only when we meet other dogs off their leads which is the problem.
;)

It's even worse in the ******************PC Games************ * ** ** * ** * * section.

**** PLEASE **** no thread is actually official, there's no reason to make one thread stand out over another

except when a thread is the single main avenue for discourse on that topic, whereupon the stars help it to be seen.

@AHarvey, are you a dog owner/trainer your self?

Both, or I was a trainer. Used to work with the 'dangerous' dogs at the local dogs home but gave it up several months ago due to money and time issues. Would love to go back.

And its much easier with dogs that aren't your own :D

My eldest dog is about 12 we think, and had serious issues on a lead, used to pull like mad and bark aggressively at other dogs. Once he got there he was fine but no one wants to let their dog near one like that. Alsations were the main issue. Rescue dogs always come with issues.

He still pulls now and then, and the barks have become whines, and sometimes he doesn't bother at all :) The trainer that said its too late for him doesn't know his arse from this elbow. You just need to find someone either willing to let you train with their dog, or look at getting a second yourself. If your dog misbehaves, pin her to the floor and make her the submissive one. One hand on the neck, other on the hind quarters. Seems nasty but it isn't and it works.

Mmm.......ok, it makes sence i supose, i don't think its harsh on the animal but il speek to some trainers in my local area.

thanks for the help. :)

:) Oh what a sweet Dog, bought a smile to my Face.

I don't know much about looking after Dogs but I felt compelled to post in here. I'm sure the company of other Dogs and possibly a different Trainer can help; as has been suggested.

I'd love to get a Dog, but my Parents wouldn't have one; and since I'll probably be living by myself when I move out; I believe it's unfair to keep a Dog if you are working all day and no one else is around to look after Him or Her.
