Hi all,

I've been tempted to buy myself a new car (brand new) and I've never owned a new car before. Obviously I haggle the prices on used cars down quite a bit. However is there much room for movement from a dealer with a new car? I'm looking to spend £21/22k on a car and would be trading in my car which is worth £7-8k.

Any advice would be much appreciated. I have looked on Whatcar and they have target prices but is there anything in particular I should be saying to the salesman or should I just use the walk away trick and let them call me up?

Just push and push for the best you can get, its bit harder with Part ex's because they can keep picking things about your car and its value etc and ask you to back down, well IMO anyway.

But at the end of the day they want a sale so just push as hard as you can go, never be afraid to just walk away, if you are always prepared to leave they may fight a bit to keep you there if you get what I mean.

Just my 2p.

Mazda MX5 2.0 Roadster Coupe Kendo. Going for a test drive on thursday, so I guess with it being a limited edition I won't have much room for movement on the price!

I think many dealers right now with the economy being what it is would be very happy to take your cash so they would give you a deal. On a 21-22k car you could maybe get something like £1k off? (guesswork) Alternatively, they might give you something like leather thrown in for free.

If you go in and say "£15k is the most I will pay. Take it or leave it." They'll laugh!

Thanks for the advice, this model has literally full spec on it as far as I know so I'd be hoping for £1000 off the price maybe as a starting point.

Well IMO - If he doesn't go to the manager to try and 'sort' something out - your doing it wrong :)

As mentioned already, you will have a fair bit of room to haggle.

Special edition MX-5s are more common than ducks with beaks.

Nice cars though, is that the tin top?

Have a look at a rag top with the optional hardtop, less practical from a storage point of view but they look great.

Thanks Fox, that seems an insane amount off the price! I'll take a look at that in more detail tomorrow does that offer trade ins as well? I had a sit in one today and it felt like a premium version of my MK3 1.8. I am leaning towards the hard top roof, as my current soft top is giving me a few issues now.

Well actually I would have to be honest and say it's been poor workmanship since a crash I had in my before xmas, basically they've put the roof back on and there's loads of issues with how they have put the panels back together.

Would a tin top have fared any better?
