How on earth did you get that?!
Some deals like that pop up occasionally, however they are extremely limited with regards to availability, times and dates. Often, they will be sold out within minutes, especially if someone sticks a link up on twitter or the like. Airlines use them as a loss leader to get people into the frame of mind of booking a flight. For the flag carrier business model of airline, the money making seats are the premium ones. They carry economy passengers at cost price or even a loss some times. It is in their interest to fill the economy cabin so that those who need to travel at last minute have to buy a full fare premium ticket.
Delta have some attractive offers on transat flights at the minute.
Oh and another tip. When you want to book a trans-Atlantic flight in economy during peak seasons, generally 21st June til the end of September, it can often pay off to wait til <30 days before departure to book. There is a risk that the flights will be full and all of the most discounted fares will be gone but if this is not the case there can be some very attractive offers on the plate.
Getting the best fare is a bit of an art as well as a complex science. There is no way to master it but you can make educated decisions. Unless you trip over an excellent offer, you have to take a risk to get the best deals.
Finally, you have to accept that fares have gone up. My average monthly spend on transatlantic flights was around the £460 mark last year. It's up to around £550 now. Nowhere near a 40%+ increase but still significant enough.
EDIT again!:
For those of you looking LHR-LAX direct, Turkish airlines had a special offer on recently to promote their new codeshare agreement with United airlines. Tickets were around $500USD all in. It was a Turkish Airlines numbered flight on United metal. I think the deal was only available through Orbitz. Have a look into it.
