Hey all,

I was a little disappointed when I first searched "Couchsurfing" on the net and I didn't find a load of pictures of people literally surfing their couchs - Nonetheless, I came across the famous site which allows travellers to host or be hosted at each others houses around the world!

Me and a few of my friends are going to Europe in April - We plan on driving to Paris (staying 2 nights), then onto Brussels (staying 1 night), and then finally to Amsterdam (staying 2 nights).

My friend, who is already on couchsurfing.org, mentioned the site and suggested we use it to meet people and to stay with them for a few days.

I've never done this before, and I like the consept. However, I was wondering if anyone here had done it before, and if anyone has any tips to make it successful? :)

Thanks,

Marky

PS.
Here's a picture for good measure...

I used it whilst I was over in Canada, I can't remember if we used couchsurfing.org or something else (my friend set it up) but worked pretty well. Stayed with 3 different people in all, two of them were really friendly and showed us our surroundings and suggestions of where to go and we went out for a meal with them.

The third erm well not so good, single male in really dingy single apartment and was absolutely filthy. Blasted out possibly the worst mix of music I have had, at the end of the day though it was a free sofa for a night so I'm not really complaining but I guess I'm saying just keep in mind there is a chance you will end up with not the best place in the world.

I think you'll be raped in the butt & killed in the face by some weirdo foreigner types who will turn your skin into scatter cushions for there own sofas.

Thanks Owen - I am obviously a little cautious, as it could be anyone - but there will be four of us, which I guess makes me feel a little better :p

Thank you my good man.
I had noticed things slackening to be honest, Some threads have reached the dizzy heights of 20 posts before GD flavour is added, I was so disappoint I had to take action.

I have a friend who has met a few cool people doing this. The first was an Eastern European stripper. She was pretty hot, the 2nd was a German student who now lives near by and we still see him.

Not sure I would do it though, he is much more relaxed than me.

I remember a thread on here about it.

Perhaps a mod can find it? I've no idea how long ago I saw it :p

I've hosted a few times - even though I was the couch provider, I thought they were great. I like being a good host, took them out boating, bought them dinner, showed them the sights etc

I've looked into it, and always meant to get involved as a host but never really got off the ground.
There's a really good community that goes with it, with the Glasgow lot having regular nights out and get together's.
Think I'll probably offer my couches up this summer, but I'm not sure how many people want to come and stay in my bit of Glasgow!

I'd love to travel the country like this - I love meeting new people and would always have a crate of beer handy in my boot. Looks awesome, although I just don't think I could bring myself to ask someone... :o

Thanks for the comments guys :)

We already have someone on there that is willing to couch us up for Amsterdam - Still looking out for Brussels and Paris :)

I'd do it, if i was suicidal and wanted to die.

Lets face it, you'll wake up one morning tied down to a wooden bench in a dark basement, in extreme pain, and see a complete nutter standing over you, with a twinkle in their eye, wielding a circular saw and wearing your right butt cheek as a makeshift operating mask.

And thats if you're lucky.

I bet everyone says couchsurfing is great, a fun thing to do, there's no bad reviews to be found. Thats because all the people who had bad experiences are dead. Probably.

either that or it's all one big black-market kidney-harvesting racket :p :D

I'm hosting someone for the first time next month... so if you don't hear from me assume the worst. Atleast that's what i've told everyone at work :o

thread revival....

My friend just signed up to this and has had 11 emails in 2 days, half of them gay blokes and the other half eastern european girls.

I was joking to him that it would be quicker to take them to the passport office and just hand over his TV/laptop.

Anyone actually done this?
