Should it be a Prius?

Sooooo, the ongoing saga of a modern motor at J69 Towers...

Her old Scenic has managed to find its way back into the carpark. The new owner, a family member who I tried to help out, decided to screw me over instead and I had to confiscate the car and bring it back home to get it off the road to avoid a fine. It's been there 3 months, unused and hopefully it will be gone again via eBay or the scrap man.

This brings us onto the subject of what next. We've not needed a car for several months, so it hasn't mattered that the Renault has been out of action and both of mine are currently broken. It's coming into car season though, so we're going to have to drive some places. She wants a Prius

I'm not totally against the idea. After all, it's just a car at the end of the day and if it doesn't do what it says on the tin or we don't like it, we'll just sell it on. If I'm honest, I think I want to find out first hand if it will do the numbers! Also: nothing else just seems to fit the bill. This is partly because we don't know what we want and partly because we do such random driving. I have little to no interest in it because I have my own cars and I'll just be a named driver, plus I know nothing about newer cars.

The flipside? Maybe its blandness will make me get my finger out and fix my two :D

dull?

trolololol

Nah, if I had the cash I'd give one a whirl for a while before they get old and expensive maybe?
Go for it, why not, report back with the mpgeeeeez :)

I'm a little confused about the point of this thread. You don't state any requirements for people to give advice and you don't tell us enough about the family drama for it to be interesting.

Thats just a coolant heat exchanger to help the coolant temps warm up on the Gen3. Nothing remotely complicated there, easy to bypass if failed aswell.

Gen 2 which is probably the one being considered has a big thermosflask instead that stores 3 litres of hot coolant to assist in heat up next time its started.

Worth a buy and try if that what 'her indoors' wants - fuel prices gives you a degree of depreciation cover aswell. If yout not using it for gaps longer than a fortnight its not great for the batteries mind.

What exactly is 'the bill' then?
Pass. She just wants to go from home to her folks about once a month which is a 200 mile round trip and occasional use for shopping to places like Bluewater. Sometimes it'll get used more than others. 7K a year is what we've averaged on the other one. Must be auto. No estate cars, edit: no big saloons, no small hatches, no 4x4s, good fuel economy. 5 years old max. £5K-8K budget. Low insurance and tax an added bonus. I'll probably be maintaining it as per usual.

Do your best, dude. I've practically given up with recommendations :D

I'm guessing if it can do the 57mpg on petrol as its owners claim it can, it'll make up any depreciation differences. Plus, with the ridiculous rises in petrol prices there's a chance people will start panic buying eco cars and it'll hold on to a bit more value.

I, personally, don't think much of Prius's - I think a straightforward Diesel makes more sense. However, everyone I know who has a Prius loves it and having sat in one, they are comfortable, spacious and well-made.

Make of that what you will.

Its the best mainstream hybrid, the honda effort is just plain terrible in comparison.

It doesnt stop it being a turgid pile of crap in itself though.

Go diesel if its pretend economy she is after.

I think 55mpg on petrol is attractive, and that's from owners who aren't driving particularly economically by the look of the Prius Chat forum. The diesels don't quite hit those numbers, plus many don't come in autos unless you step up to the bigger saloons which is not what we're looking for.

No driving involvement though, a diesel is a better drive.

It sounds like an economics driven decision rather than emotional one though

They are all automatics, due to the engine cycle(Atkinson?), they are not great on the economy when driven on the motorway but do come into their own on stop start city commutes.
How does one of them compare with a CVT Micra?

My Mrs always hits atleast 50mpg on her Jazz in petrol, it's so good on fuel around town I really don't know why they bothered with the new hybrid.

What the new Jazz hybrid?

I'm interested in taking one out just out of curiousity to see how it is.
