Anyone advise on this please?

I have got a number of online quotes from comparison websites and also from a few places which say they specialise in cheaper insurance for drivers with motoring convictions. They are all much the same, but the cheapest by far is online at Tesco.com - I'm a bit confused why they are so much cheaper (maybe 20-30%) than everyone else. It doesn't look as if I can ring them up to verify either as they only do online quotes from what I can see.

My brother just went back to his old insurance company, Admiral they only put it up a bit, couple hundred quid i think, that was a few years ago mind.

Have you tried your old company?

I tried them online (direct line) and their quote was much the same as the cheapest elsewhere, except for Tesco.

Tesco are quoting me £696 on a 1999 Mondeo 1.8LX, or £793 on a 1999 Vectra 2.0SRi 140. Do those sound too cheap? I am 38, have 3yrs NCB, conviction is DR30 (24 month ban), plus one claim, me at fault, hit stationary object, no injuries.

I'll see if my brother in law can tell me who he is with, he had a 24 month ban for drink driving also.

Try the usual Greenlight, Sky Insurance, Noel Dazely, Chris Knott, Adrian Flux.

Looking at comparison websites I'm looking to be paying double when I get my licence back in May. I am 25 though with only 4 years no claims so it's never going to be pretty with a DR20 to add on.

I'll be interested to see how you get on though. I'm a little nervous to be honest!

Okay I just rang Adrian Flux and got a quote... on the Mondeo 1.8LX they want £896 (TPF+T)

That's without the breakdown cover and key care crap they try to push onto you otherwise it would have been closer to a grand.

Is your NCB still valid after the 24 month ban? Normally it expires after 2 years.

The insurance policy was paid up to September of 2009 even though the ban began in January 2009. I have a letter from my insurer stating that the 3yrs NCB is valid as of Sept 2009, so I should have two years from that date, ie. Sept 2011.

Nope, that should be fine. I let my insurance run its course (2 months after ban) so I have 4 years waiting for me as it's only a 9 month ban.

I went to quote with Tesco but they don't do modified or imports so I can't get a comparison quote compared to the comparison sites. Moving myself into the future, the quotes are about £1400 on confused.com for a UK spec MX5. Useless quoting an import on those sites, I will have to go with a specialist regardless but I'll be happy with £1400 tbh!

I got quoted £1,201.15 on confused.com for the exact same Mondeo I mentioned above.

GoCompare.com and TescoCompare.com both quoted a very precise £1,000.00 for it. (TescoCompare not to be confused with Tesco.com car insurance)

So you can see why I am dubious about how cheap the Tesco.com quote is! I found a phone number for them anyway so I will ring up at some point and check it's not too good to be true.
