your lunch break for example. is there a communal room or canteen, do you take lunch at your desk or all go down the pub? or do you prefer to eat in your car or go out for a smoke ie anything to get out of the office?

i was always the latter

it was a never a case of being a 'social retard'. it was a case of if i didn't get out, i didn't really get a lunch break as i would get caught up in something and before i knew it, the best part of my break had gone.

Normally eat my sandwich in the communal room and talk to whoever is in there, we aren't allowed to eat warm (smelly) food at our desks. Yet right at this minute my boss is next to me with a burrito..

Really frustrating as well, she does this every day...
I always try to have 1 day a week where we go out and get something different. Although I may make an exception today and have another one as it is such a nice day.

I usually eat at my desk, and we all go down the local cafe once a week and the pub on a Friday after training.

I've worked with people i loathe to talk to, so i make the most of it with peoples company i enjoy. It makes a surprising difference to the working week to have a chat and a laugh

I have to get outside every day, but I usually do it with colleagues. Nothing worse than being stuck at a desk for eight hours a day, and having to eat your lunch at it.

I've always used my break as a chance to get away for a bit, so usually go to the shops or listen to the radio in the car.

I can talk to my colleagues all day so its nice to have a break to myself for a bit.

. Friday is pub day and comes with an extended break :)

Ah I miss that from my old place. No one in the business seemed to care that a load of IT people were out all afternoon and should anything go wrong the person on call would have had a few beers. Contractors included :D

Not if I can help it. All they ever talk about is themselves. I'm not interested in their boring lives, just as their not interested in mine.
Quick HI here & there & I'm outta there.

Don't really have time for much of a break any more... chat to the people I immediatly work with but don't have much social interaction with those in other depts for the most part.

We have a large tea room/rest area so always lunch with my departmental colleagues, sometimes I even talk to people from biochemistry, heamatology, cytology and the morgue ghouls as well!!!

Same here, all our departments have lunch in the same place - biochem, haem, transfusion & sample reception. Our coag lab is across a corridor and they have their own tea room, but a lot of them come over for lunch because there's more people in our tea room, but the office girls always hijack the TV at 13:45 for Neighbours and Home & Away.

I take it you work in the lab? What department?
