Hi guys im after a new laptop and the xps 15 with the i5 fits my requirments nicely, just woundered if theyre any good or not?

if not, any good alternatives?

cheers

Yeah I was looking at the Dell outlet shop, they have some i5 laptops with 500GB and 4GB memory for around £400, very tempting but I have never owned a dell laptop or computer so I don't know if they're good or not sorry.

The XPS range is really good, still got my M1530 which is almost 3 years old although its starting to fail on me but thats due to the fact I've dropped it over a dozen times hit it against walls all the times and just out right abused it surpised its still working.

The warranty is really good if anything happens dell come to your house the next day and fix it for you ( my dad managed to destory my HDD one time and the laptop wouldnt even boot up).

I think ill get a xps 15 soon or see if something similar to the m1530 comes out soon as I like the style.

Does anyone have any experiance with the 15.6 inch 1080p screen? surely that will be too big for a small screen??

I have one of these with an i7 and gt435m and it's a pretty awesome laptop, the build quality is superb and it can run games like bc2 and gta4 on decent ish settings pretty comfortably (at a res of 1366x768 but shhh :p)

The speakers are pretty good too, best laptop speakers I've heard infact, not had a play with the hd webcam but that's supposed to be pretty awesome.

Would definitely recommend getting one, my only advice would be to get the 9-cell battery if available for that config.

Was gonna order one this friday but just been on usa site and their Xps have sandybridge i5's and the uk ones still have 1st gen, whats all this about??!!? glad i didnt order

Picked up an i5 XPS 15 in the last couple of weeks from Dell Outlet and I've been very impressed so far, although I've only got the standard 768p screen.

As mentioned the sound is about as good as you can get on a laptop at the moment, still limited on the bass but nice and bright and doesn't distort too much even at full blast.

The keyboard is a bit spongey but adequate (no backlighting on the UK models), the touchpad is nice to use and configurable to the full range of gestures which is a nice feature.

The nv gfx is pretty good for the price and adequate for running most current stuff at medium. Gets a bit toasty when its running games and the system fan will get fairly loud but not too bad. NV's optimus tech switches seamlessly between the nv and on-chip intel gfx very well, had no problem with it. Normal use, the system fan spins up now and again if turbo-boost kicks in but mostly it stays very quiet with the cpu fan just about audible.

The standard 6 cell battery is ok but you'll be lucky to get more than 2 hours out of it if you're running a lot of multimedia flat out, more like 3.5 if you're just surfing. If you can get one with a 9 cell it's obviously better but the battery is a lot bigger and will raise the base quite a bit at the back.

Slight draw back is the weight, it's a pretty bulky unit so if you were planning to carry it around all day you might find it a bit cumbersome. Also, the third party usb 3 tends to drop out a little too regularly, seems to be connected with power management, I'm trying the latest drivers so I can't say as yet if it has cured the problem, hope so as it's a major pain if you're using a wireless mouse.

All-in-all for what I paid (£430) I'd consider it a bargain, so if you can get one for this sort of price you can't go wrong really.

I have been checking the Dell Outlet daily to pick up one of this 1080p i5 machines, they were ten a penny a few weeks ago but hardly anything recently.

As for the quality of the machines, we have their business range at work and while they seem to be very reliable machines, not had first hand experience of the XPS machines, however, I have heard very little in the way of bad things about them.
