okay firstly about me, im a electronic engineering grad from university of london just graduated this year. came out and no job offers, gotten a few interviews for graduate positions and was told by 2 of them i didnt have enough experience...... excuse me? experience for a grad position? .... er........

anyway... few months later im still unemployed claiming job seekers and just finished a security course last week.

then a call from my old friend from secondary school, and hes working for those Barclay bike hire around London, and offered to get me a job by referring me to a 16k/a job just cycling the bikes around and cleaning them. at first thought omg!! thanks!! yess!! then i remembered i just finished my security course and waiting for my security licence.

now according to the trainers from my course there are a lot of oppotunitys out there for security at the moment, but getting a job isnt garenteed. however it would pay a lot better with a average around £10/h + i can make £250 in a week end if i pik up a few shifts in a night club.

so i dont want to accept the offer from my mate and then leave in a few months making him look bad, but having a job in the current economy is just great.

so what should i do?
1 accept offer
2 decline and look for security jobs
3 other?

Take the job. What if you don't get a security job... you don't want to be living off 50 quid a week forever. I'm sure your mate will realise your reason for leaving... I certainly wouldn't be knocking back a job and living off 50 quid a week just to save his feelings if you do leave.

Yeah. How will it make him look bad? Just tell him you will probably move to a different job in a few months, if he says no then don't work for him.

Noobie, just from a future engineers perspective do you think EE should be avoided versus other engineering subjects? I have no real favourite over Aeronautical or ME but am just wondering what the economic climate is favouring and is best for my future.
I am studying Electronics, Maths ,Physics,Computing and I am trying to make up my mind on what path I am going to take. I am going on a few summer schools just to have a feel for the fields, as you are in this field it would be great to hear what you feel.

£16,000 doing the job from your mate is going to be more than £250 a week doing security work anyway, I'd take the job from your mate.

waiting for your SIA license or something else in the security industry?

general security stuff is crap work, very boring. something to remember.

i dont really know about other parts of engineering but for electronics me and piratically half my class find it hard to find jobs, most branched out to something else and only a few found jobs in it. (half because i only keep in touch with my friends). over these few months i seen quite a few it and programming jobs which can be a good thing to look into if your good at programming. im not going to tell you stop electronics and look into something else because there are jobs out there but they want you to get summer positions and get experience which i tried and didnt get in any so i couldn't do anything. so my advice is try to apply for summer internships and get some experience before you graduate

you got this wrong

its £10/h in week days so if i was to do 12hr shifts mon- fir

thats £120 a day x 5 = £600

+ bonus if i find a night club job over week end £250

= £850

ofc there will be tax and stuff prob end up with £400

and yes im waiting for SIA door supervisor license

on the phone he specifically asked me your looking for long term right? if i reffer you and then you leave in a few months it will make me look u know....

im not 100% sure how it makes him look bad, but i think he means his boss will hire me becuase he referred me and if i leave a bad impression then he will question his ability to assess people. and therefore his boss probably wont trust any one he introduces to the company or something.

Electrical engineering is the place to be right now. If you work hard, you'll find employers fighting over you.

I'm aiming for an electrical engineering job in automotive (electric/hybrid vehicle design etc) and I've had interviews with several companies and also some offers.

Experience is essential though. Get engineering summer jobs or internships and it looks great on your CV.

To be honest, it sounds like the kind of role people pick up for a few months then leave anyway, so what harm will there be in leaving?

Get some cash in your pocket.

if he's a good mate, and has specifically enquired as to how long you'll stay, and you go back on that it WILL make him look like a tit, and it would pee me off if a mate did that. You lose credibility.

What security job requires 12h a day, and i think those working hour expectations are pretty unacheivable for any length of time tbh

do the £16k job and do door work in the evening?

have you done anything like door work before? where you looking to do it?

OP, did you participate in any kind of summer internship or sandwich year during your studies? Because that is what companies expect and if you didn't, might be why they rejected you.
