My 98000GTX: 2008-2011- Retired

Just replaced my 9800GTX with my new 6950 (still holding down on a 520W PSU :O). Over the years of gaming I have become very fond of my 9800GTX, and it is a shame to take it out for the last time. It has played games all the way from Crysis and COD4 to the latest games like Mafia II and *cough* Black Ops. It has been a real tank of a card, absorbing whatever rubbish that old no-brand PSU was pumping though it, and on another incident survived at least 2 weeks with a metal spring on top of it! I had installed my CoolIT Vantage a while ago and popped it open one day to have a look at the inside, I had noticed that the CPU temperature had risen and the coolant temperature had lowered suddenly 2 weeks before so went to have a look inside. After a fair bit of poking I discovered that one of the spring loaded screws for securing the Vantage to the CPU was missing. Then I looked around and found a spring from the screw sitting across at least 5 solder joints on the board! I was completely bewildered that it hadn't caused any damage, especially considering I had been tilting the case while the spring must have been on the board. Been through a ton of different things that would have wrecked most cards- an absolute tank!

Question is, what do I do with it? I could sell it, but it is worth reasonably little. I could keep it as a spare. Thinking about it, it would look great on my wall right about there... :)

Yeah, add some extra performance to your system by making it a physx card, or just keep it as a spare, as you never know when its gonna come in handy (gpu might break down and youre without one while it RMA's for example)

I do intend to keep it as a spare. Good idea with physx, may mod the cooler to make it fit in with whatever colour scheme I'm going to use. Would be a great use of that fantastic little card! Will have to sort out a new PSU though, still not confident about it handling a 6950 yet! The 6950 will get flashed at some point too.

In fact, I have Mafia II, and BF3 is around the corner so it would be a fantastic use! How to you set up physx? Going to have to do a little reading!

I have an old crappy OEM GT220 which I may use as a PhysX card. I run a 560 though. Would it be worth it in games such as Darkest of Days and Mafia II?

I'd keep it.

As I game most nights, if my current one failed I would go a bit stir crazy not having a PC for a few days, so the old one does as a capable spare.

Someone I know had a 9800gtx and found it to be a surprisingly fast card. I'm sure most of us have had a card that we liked that bit extra over previous ones. I sold my 4870X2 quite recently and was a little sorry to see her go.

I know! I am still extremely impressed with my 9800GTX. It is fast considering it's age and handles almost every modern game in 1080p. I bought it second hand for £80 and has never given me any problems, thats value for money!

It's one thing if a card dies on you but when they are replaced after many years loyal service it is a shame :(

I too had a 9800gtx (dark knight edition). great card. Mine died on me in December. sad times. currently looking at a worthy replacement (to go into whole new rig - thats what normally happens when a card dies, no? lol)
most likely be the 6950. Although I do feel like a sheep

9800 :) hold on to it, i cant ditch my old, xD still got my radeon 2900xt and my gtx 260, such win cards, cant bring myself to sell them, even though the gtx 260 would sell for a fair bit

Still haven't got rid of my 8800GT, was a great card and as it's not worth much I'm keeping it. not worth much more than £25-£30 so i don;t really see the point in selling it TBH. Single PCI-E 16x on my board too.

sell it. it's an old POS now. no sense in getting sentimental over computer hardware....especially the infamous g92
